I have a problem with the freezer section of my C239. The first indication that something was wrong – the freezer woke me up in the middle of the night – due to the loud noise it was making (sort of screeching noise – definately something rotating – or trying to). In the morning the noise had gone but the freezer did not get cold enough! After a bout a week the freezer alarm light started to flash. So I defrosted (after turning the thermostat to zero) the freezer by putting a bowl of warm water inside. When I turned the thermostat up – nothing happened! After opening / closing the door / scratching my head / switching the fast freeze button on and off – the compressor cut in (and has not yet cut out again). The freezer temp. remained at around -5 celsius until the freezer completely frosted up and the freezer alarm has come on again after about a week.

Note: the compressor seems to be running very hot (maybe not a big surprise as it runs non stop. door seal looks good. freezer door has not been left open

    Questions:

    1) any idea of what could be wrong?
    2) should i have switched the unit off at the socket to reset it?
    3) any tests that i could perform to help me find out how terminal this fault is?

Possibly a fan motor or defrost circuit not correct allowing an ice build up to hit the fan and/or block the airflow, that would be the good news.

Possibly the compressor, that would be the death knell.

Either way the only way I think you’re going to be sure here is to have it checked I’m afraid.

I have a feeling that the fault may lie with the evap fan motor – can you quote price / availabilty for this part?

Please do not buy the evap fan motor, it will not be the cause of the compressor running very hot, or not switching off. You probably have a system fault and should call in a system engineer 1st.

Go into repairs@ to find a repairer in your area or look in the directories.

I’d agree with Kev, even if the fan motor were now goosed you have ask why that is and why did the ice build up to allow that to happen as that’s about the only way I reckon you’d get that level of noise. With the other symptoms, i.e. the compressor running hot and constant but not cooling, there may well be a system fault.

Not a DIY one I’m afraid.
