    Greetings All,

Just to start the new year – my Mother’s dishwasher decided to throw a wobbly (‘:(‘)

Normally the dishwasher is left to run overnight, however, the day after New Year it was found not to have advanced fully through its progam and the water had not drained. Setting the program controller at the various points to drain did not result in success (‘’)

After heaving the beast from its cubby hole, I managed to drain it partially – a challenge given the relative height between the base and the hose – looks like I will have to raise it onto some blocks. On the off-chance, set the controller to drain and this time it worked. (‘:rolls:’) The machine has not been used since – partly because I live 200 miles away!

Thought I would just get some insight into the problem before I go back in a few weeks time. I am guessing that the problem is one of (a) a blockage, (b) a blocked pump or (c) something wrong with program controller.(‘:?’)

The dishwasher is (I think) nearing ten years of age; has proven to be very reliable over this time; the plates, cutlery, etc are thoroughly rinsed before placing them in the dishwasher.(‘8O’)

If its normal service can be resumed then I might reward it with a new lower basket, I noted that the current one has started to rust; are spare parts available? (‘’)

Any thoughts from the engineers would be most welcome.

They weren’t too bad back then….

    Possibilities:

1/ Given the time of year, frozen. (Machine now works..)
2/ Old, tired drain pump. Entirely possible, the machine is older than you think. Generic Askoll type motor unit will go straight on at little expense.
3/ Foreign body now passed through.
4/ Dodgy wiring at door pivot point – door outer off to check.
5/ Timer – unlikely; they work or they don’t, there is n’t usually a half way position.

Don’t go mad with it – an awful lot of the parts are going obsolete.

    Hello Penguin,

Thank you for your considered reply. I will be travelling back to visit my Mother in about two weeks time – principally to finish off some decorating – but will find time to examine and test the dishwasher’s performance.

    Reflecting on your comments:

I think I can discount a frozen pipe as the kitchen is heated by electric storage heaters that switch-on overnight.

Machine was purchased from new – probably around 1999/2000 (I had not long started work with my currently employer after finishing my studies. I got fed up of my parents and siblings arguing over the washing-up!) So an old tired pump is possible – as far as I know nothing has been replaced.

A foreign body – I have feeling this is the most probably cause.

I will examine the door wiring with care.

Following my venture North, I shall wrestle with the machine. I will report back my findings in a few weeks time. Hopefully, this may help someone in the future.
