ParticipantGuys.
I have an Indesit D63, where the heater element appears to be getting too hot. It smells of burning. When i Open the door mid cycle, the heater element is not submerged. (i’m not usure if it’s supposed to be, but I would have assumed so) ?
My thoughts were maybe it’s not taking in enough water, so I added a pan full manually, and it seemed to continue without issues.
I’ve spotted that the top stray arm fixing nut seal has perished, and stopping mid cycle it appears that the top spray arm is not spinning.
(I assume through lack of water pressure because of the perisged seal)
We have a new kitchen coming in a few weeks, so it only has to last another month at the most.
Before I start throwing money at it, could the perished seal be the cause of the problem ?August 28, 2011 at 1:38 pm #357930iadom

You should not open the door mid cycle, the water level does not cover the heater when the machine is in operation, no need as the water is spraying onto the element all the time it is running, when the door is closed that is. 😉
The spray arms are quite cheap on these so replacing the top one would be a good idea.

Based on that, I’ve ordered a replacement nut. Maybe the fact that the top spray arm is not moving might have some bearing on it.

It seems that the problem is not the damaged top spray bar seal. Although the top spray bar does now appear to be spinning again.
The problem appears to be around program number 3.
If I put the unit on a full cycle, when it reaches program 3, around the mid point, the water is drained away, but the heating element is running.
I can usually tell, as it doesn’t sound right when it’s trying to pump, what little (if at any) water around.
In the short term, we are running the unit on a quick wash (program 5)
Any thoughts ?September 7, 2011 at 4:51 pm #357933iadom

Just to add, it did this again last night and filled the kitchen with smoke. The heater element was running red hot, with no water in the bottom.
At the same point, midway on program number 3.September 9, 2011 at 9:58 am #357936iadom

We only deal in the truth here, brutal as it might seem.
As you have already intimated that you are going to replace this appliance very shortly the chances are that by the time you did find out what was wrong with it you would have paid out more than it is worth.
The fault ‘could be’ the control timer, main circulation pump or the pressure switch.
Now as the motor is £100 ex vat, the timer £70 ex vat and the pressure switch around £17 ex vat and none of these are certain to cure the fault I truly think a few more weeks with the rubber gloves and Fairy Liquid would be a better option than trying to repair what is after all a low end, budget appliance. 🙂
