    Hi all
This machine trips the house rcd. It fills but when the timer moves to the next notch to start the pump circulating the rcd trips immediately. Same in all programs. If I reset the rcd and set the timer right around to drain out the rcd doesn’t trip. (It’s a recently fitted timer BTW and was ok). So it only seems to happen whenever the circulation pump gets energised.

I dismantled the machine and the base was full of water, and I mean full! Dried everything out and rebuilt but the rcd still tripped. Removed pump and there was possible evidence of water leaking down motor spindle, may be this is what filled the base up and no doubt into the motor. Is it likely the water has permanently shorted the motor or something else. Any ideas what test would confirm this or any suggestions gratefully received. Many Thanks

Water leak almost certainly the cause, may have permanently damaged motor, you could remove the motor and attempt to dry it completely. You would need a meggar or multimeter to check the insulation readings on the motor. New motor/pump assy is around £80.00 inc vat., but be careful, there are two different motors used. Pump is available as a separate item should you rescue the motor.

Plug out at all times when working on the machine. :zap:

Thanks. I guess this means the pump seal failed, so would need a new pump at the very least. Don’t supppose you know what readings I should get with the meter. I did meter it and got about 140ohms betwen red and blue terminals and almost (but not quite) total resistance between red or blue terminals to pump body. Not sure if this is right. I could remove it again and leave it on a radiator for a day, see if that helps, appreciate any thoughts. Thanks again.

    There’s the problem then 😉

Try the drying out and see if you get total open circuit to the body as it should be otherwise new motor/pump required.

I dried the motor on the radiator and with a little help from a hair dryer and sure enough got open circuit. It worked! Thanks Dave.

Not only that, found the source of the leak, not the pump as I thought but a tiny split in the drain hose near the pump, not visible unless the hose was removed. Just happened to be looking when it pumped out and saw a jet of water spraying upwards onto the top of the recirculation motor, hence it appeared to be at fault as the dripping was underneath it. One new hose later and not a drop in sight. So all is well again. Many thanks

Bad luck Iadom – it’s only ever the last post that’s remembered. We all love you really 😀

No problem, you can always take the blame if it goes up in smoke. 😉 😆

Sorry iadom! In my almost ridiculous elation at having it working again forgot to check earlier posts and say thanks. You were quite right, the motor needed to be completely dry. Sincere thanks for your advice.
