ParticipantHi.
I have an Indesit DIF16 dishwasher. The problem is that it doesn’t seem to get much water in the machine. 😕 It pumps out strongly, so I’m guessing the motor is fine. I have cleaned out all spray arms and the pump itself (which was pretty gungy) but still no improvement. I have been advised it might be the solenoid valve, which would make sense as it’s filling weakly but emptying strongly. But I am not an engineer and I’m unsure where to find it on the machine, if indeed it even has one!

The pump that drains the machine is not the one that does the wash. The main circulation pump is used to pump the water round the spray arms. It could well be filling fine, they don’t have a lot of water in them. You may have have a seized wash pump motor.
Can you hear a faint buzzing noise?
Poor fill should give an error message.April 9, 2013 at 4:12 pm #393332petewells

Hi Iadom
That’s a great reply, thank you. At least I know I’m not looking for a valve now! I can’t say that I’ve heard any buzzing.
I currently have the machine laid on its front, bottom panel off. I took the big motor off – which pump is that, circulation or wash pump? My electrician friend said he will test things for me, but clearly I have no idea what I’m looking at!! If that big one is one pump, is the other pump the smaller one I have also disconnected? That one has like a 4 bladed red fan affair on it and it seems to turn ok by hand, not sure if that means it’s ok or not.
Sorry for sounding like a complete numpty but when it comes to this, that’s what I am!!
Really appreciate your help with this, thanks.

It should only be tipped onto its back or left hand side looking from the front. 😥
The small pump is the drain pump and as you say it drains out that is obviously ok.
Sometimes the capacitor for the wash motor can fail, you should be able to turn the impellor inside the large pump.
As I have said they don’t use a lot of water but to check you could add some water manually to test as long as you don’t overfill it.As also mentioned though you should get some of the lights flashing if it is not filling correctly.

This is a picture of the smaller pump….which one is this?

Oh, sorry, you replied before I posted the picture! So that is the drain pump. Ok.
We didn’t get any lights flashing when it was all connected up. So it’s worth getting the capacitor checked on the wash motor (the OTHER pump?). That’s great, thank you – I will take it to my friend and get him to check it! I will get back to you when that’s done (might be a day or two)
Oh and thanks for the tip on how to tip the machine over!! Whoops!! Hopefully I’ve not hurt it! 😳

The main circulation pump itself is known to fail on these but you would usually get some sort of noise out of it.
The wiring loom in the door is rather flimsy ( like the rest of the machine ) and can also stop the motor running if it has a break in it.
