    HI,

This tumble dryer is starting to annoy the client with the slow uptake of turning the drum. It looks as if the belt is slipping but the belt is not slipping, Once it start turning, it appears to be stiff then gained momentum.

Wondering if it is the capacitor or worn motor?

    What do you think?

Probably fluff build up around front seal or capacitor

Capacitor approx. £2. Very prone to failure.
Motor, I dunno’ what? £50? On the rare occasions they fail, they usually do so with a burning smell and pack up completely.
So you’re not going along with a motor just in case? 😕 Is this a 50 mile trip or something?

Capacitor 9 times out ten, always carry a selection, @ a couple of quid each they are essential van stock in a country area.

I’m going for the capacitor. The type of motor I am used to seeing are very hardy and rarely see failures except for one of the tumble dryer whose drum collapsed and landed on the motor thus killing the motor. It was kind of almost complete rebuild, it was insurance work. Sometime I wonder if it is easier to get a new tumble dryer than rebuilding it!

Anyway the one I am now working on is in a fine condition, so I am going for the capacitor. Will take note of what to take as there are two ratings for the same machine.

As for 50 mile trip, it’s more like 12 miles round trip. No biggie. I wouldn’t go on a job that is more than 10 miles radius from my house otherwise it costs too much on fuel.

Sometimes the odd value like 7.5uf will come up as genuine only at an OTT price. 8uf is more than near enough to cover these. A meter with direct capacitance measuring is useful as it will confirm if the old one’s down.
If that doesn’t sort it, don’t forget what Chris said about bunged up front seal.
    Mike.
