ParticipantGas Hob with Electric oven. Problem is with the oven. Gas hob and the electric ignition for it are working fine. Oven not working. The cooker was working fine when last used but has been in storage for about a year. The oven lamp had blown so this was changed. On the oven control switch the first switch option is to put tht lamp and fan on and for defrosting. This works. As soon as the control switch is moved to heat up the oven it shorts out and blows the fuse and sets off the house trip switch. I would think it was the switch but there are 2 parts to it. there is a first part which is the contacts which activate on moving the control switch. There is no sparking from this. The second part which pushes into the contacts has an arm (the part that pushes into the contacts) which turns with the control switch. The thermosat bulb is also not working but that is in the circuit with the control switch. A continuity check on the bulb shows it is blown.
Any ideas, don’t want to start buying parts I do not need also could the problem be elsewhere ie the element?
oven has a varible timer control which is a switch with up to 120 mins on it which counts down and then rings to switch off the oven. There is a hand symbol on the switch for manual use of the oven. I have tried using the oven on both selections. The lamp and fan did come on using the manual selection which would seem to indicate that the switch for the timer is ok ?

I’d be checking the elements for earth leakage……..
With the power off, of course.

futher to your advice as to the earth leakage, I have been informed that moisture in the electrics could cause the problem. As the cooker was in storage in a garage for over a year this could make sense. So drying the whole thing now (have used wd40 to expel any moisture). I have ordered a new thermostat light which had blown and will post another reply as and when I get success. !!

Great news. getting the moisture out of the electrics and checking the earthing (I also cleaned all the earthing connections in case) has worked. Now I have one very good cooker in perfect working order. Thanks for the help. This a great site.
