ParticipantI have an Indesit W103 washing machine with failing bearings (noise & excess drum movement).
I’ve read a couple of posts on this forum about bearing replacements.
I have a question that does’nt seem to be clear on the posts.
Can I remove the backplate (containing the bearings) with the drum in situ, (remove either from the rear or top once retaining band taken off) or do I need to remove the whole drum assembly ?Any advice before I start would be gratefully recieved.
Cheers Roger

Yes Roger, just releasing the barrel clamp and withdrawing the whole inner drum and backplate from the outer drum (in situ) is the way to go!
Replacing bearings and seal is not the complete answer unless you replace the inner drum shaft as well ‘cos that’ll be shot as well as your bearings! 🙁

Thanks for the reply Martin.
The machine is only two years old, so hopefully the shaft will be ok, I’ll find out when I get the thing apart and I can check the shaft. I think the reason for the bearing failure was it’s early use, I kept telling the missus not to overload it. Now she knows !!
Question
Best place for bearings/bits through yourselves or from 4Indesit.co.uk ?
I’m more than happy to use yourselves as a bit of thanks for the information.Roger

Really?…..Hold up! What is the exact model number here? I was quoting for a more elderly W103 going back 6 plus years?
If you have a W103UK/B then that nastie load of tosh has a plastic outer drum assembly. If yours has got a barrel clamb as I mentioned earlier, then no way is it only 2 years old?

Well seeing as its the pantomime season,
All together guys, “oh no it isn’t” its due to quality or in this case lack of it. 😥
If that model number you have given is correct, then as Martin says, it has a sealed drum, the only solution is a complete drum assy costing around £106.00 for the part alone.8O I scrapped one of these last week that was 18 months old because the drum support had snapped.
Don’t blame the wife, unless she insisted on buying it in the first place. 😉

Guy’s, the Model number is correct – W103UK BG.
I’ve only had the rear panel off to check the play in the bearings and can’t remember whether it had a barrel calmp or not. I hav’nt looked at in depth since trying to find out how to fix it!, but checking out 4indesit.co.uk they quote £119.25 for a Plastic Tank – close to your estimate of £106 iadom.
Looks like we bought a load of *$&* that needs scrapping 😥
We bought it from a discount store 2-3 yrs ago, it was cheap but obviously you get what you pay for 😕
I think I now know what to get the missus for xmas…only joking she’d kill me!Any recommendations for a replacement, build quality vs spares cost/availability vs initial cost or good links to reviews would be appreciated 🙂
Finaly a big thank you to the moderators and uk Whitegoods.co.uk.
It’s refreshing to find a site/people that are willing to impart their hard earned knowledge to others for free !!

This one is not bad. 😉 http://www.iseappliances.co.uk/
Mid range Bosch is good, upper priced Whirpool & Zanussi OK. Meile is the cream but it costs.
Better to spend £350 to £400 upwards for something that will last 10 to 15 years than £200 on one that you will be scrapping every two or three years.
Lots of useful info here. http://tinyurl.com/zez8h
