    Wondering if anyone could help

We have an indesit W103 that has developed a rip in the drum.

Does any one know what may of caused this?

Our land lord is refusing to replace the washing machine saying that it was “mis use”

No foreign objects were in the washing machine that could of caused the tear. Also the washing machine has been fairly noisy recently, particulary on spin, though also it does not sound very good generally.

    Hi Lesley,

If the drum is ripped it will, with almost no doubt whatsoever, have been a foreign object in the drum. Coins, nails, screws etc. can all cause this sort of damage and almost any manufacturer regards this as customer misuse, after all it’s a clothes washer not a coin washer. 😉

There are some photos of the type of damage caused in the photo gallery.

Any parts that could possibly break up, such as bearings, would not cause this type of damage as a general rule, or at least in 20 years I’ve never seen it. But I have seen a 20p piece flipped up on the heater tear a drum to shreds quite often.

If it was a coin, would it do it straight away, or if had been hidden in the machine for a while could it damage it later

As the load of washing that resulted in the damage had no coins as I had checked it before.

Also is there anyway of replacing the drum without replacing the whole machine or is the machine a complete write off.

Hi, yeah it could have been something lurking there for a while. I’ve often seen a pile of stuff at the bottom of a tank or in the filter and/or sump hose.

You can replace the drum, yes, but it’s probably not the most economical of routes knowing Indesit pricing, it’s also not a two minute job.

There’s a couple of versions of these, to identify I’ll need the full model and serial numbers from the rating plate please.

But, I don’t think you’d get much change out of £150 by the time it’s been fitted to be honest.

    Thanks for you help

I’ll pass this on to my landlord, who seems to think that we have been putting axes in the washing machine delibrately.

hi there , I think you should check the bearings.I worked 4 years with Indesit and Ariston washing machines and that kind a marks are definitly caused by bearings

    Re: Indesit W103 ripped drum

yeah one washing maching engineer I phoned said it could either be caused by a metal object or the bearings going. It has been sounding really horrendus recently so he thought it was the bearings but would obviously need to look at it.

The problem I have got is the person the land lord got round to look at it , didn’t even look inside it to check if it was the bearings or not and he is refusing to get him to look at it again properly. So i trying to find out if it is worth calling out the engineer myself as I’m going to lose my deposit on the house at the current rate.
