Indesit W123 tripped MCB, burnt board, overfilling

Hi,

I hope someone can advise me with this problem.

It started with a tripped MCB. I reset & tried it again to see if I could find out what was wrong, but it worked fine for a while. Various problems followed, burning smell, dial turning on its own (no flashing error codes that I recall).

I’ve got an old Haynes Washing Machine manual, and have been successful repairing some in the past, but this one’s got me stumped. I got the latest edition of the manual from the library as well.

It seems to be overfilling, so I checked the pressure vessel / switch assembly. I took it all off, cleaned it, put it in the sink, filled with water & checked with meter if the contacts were closing & staying closed, all seemed fine. Put it back.

I’ve checked & cleaned the motor brushes, checked the heater for continuity, checked the suppressor. It’s pumping out fine.

The main issues I can see are, burning on the bottom edge of the circuit board, and overfilling. It basically just keeps on filling until I get worried & switch it off, or turn the water off. If I switch it off, it stops filling, which I believe means the valves are ok? Also, when filling, water is going into all chambers of the powder draw all the time. This can’t be right can it? It continually fills, with water half way up the door, and running straight out the drain hose. After a few minutes, it starts making noises like the dial turning, but don’t think it actually turns, and no flashing light when this happens. At one stage, it was making ‘popping’ noises when running. I suspect too much water was straining the motor? Does that sound possible?

I suspect I should change the circuit board, but am wary of this if there is another fault which will burn out a new one.

Can anyone advise if it’s likely to be just the board? It’s probably not worth paying out if it’s more than that?

Burning of the fine tracks at the bottom of the pcb is your problem – the connections from the pressure switch run through that area of the board.

Repair is now an issue for independent repairers and home repairers alike. To solve this problem, you now need a new pcb, and port adaptor, a card reader and a suitable programme card. It just isn’t worth it…….

junkmail, junk machine, possibly the worst electronics on the market ATM.

Don’t waste your time with a new PCB, you will need a new board at around £90, a smart card to programme the board at between £15 & £20, and you will also need a smart card reader costing between £50 & £75 to use the card to programme the board.

Do yourself a favour and invest in something better, be prepared to budget over £350, possibly more or you will still be in cheapo territory.

Thanks very much for the quick & honest replies guys.

Appreciate it may not be the best machine around, but it was free from the mother-in-law, so can’t complain!

I notice there’s a board here:http://www.qualityelectronicrepairs.co.uk/lists/laundrymodels-indesit_1.html for £29. Can you advise if that would complete the job, or would it still need programming etc?

It would not need programming but as to whether it would complete the job or not is another matter altogether.

The success rate is not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} guaranteed, in fact it is nowhere near that rate TBH.

You would also have to be certain you have eliminated any possible reasons for the initial failure, quite apart from the fact that they do fail with alarming regularity.

The pressure switches are another weak point that could be related to this fault.

If you can afford to lose the £35 to £40 it will cost you then give it a go.

Personally I wouldn’t waste my money on it.
