ParticipantHello
I have a 6 year old Indesit W123 that has suddenly become very noisy on the spin cycle.
Am i correct to assume the drum bearings have gone?
If it is the drum bearings can these be replaced? I done a few google searches for the problem and some results suggested the bearings cannot be replaced and that a ‘bearing + spider’ assembly is required.
Any advice much appreciated.
Cheers

The bearings can be removed from the spider, not an easy job, and one that leads to several deep scars, even for the experts. There are a couple of different sized drum shaft & bearing kits, you have to measure them. Also if the drum shaft is badly damaged then it really is not worth repairing one of these.

jim, is this the model range with the spyder bolted to the back plate/tub edge with the star bolt heads? if so its as you say a tricky job just to get the spyder off and replaced in exactly the right place especially if it has that cute little spacer…not a diy job methinks.

It is one of those beasties Richard, several members of the public have managed to do this, but not without a degree of difficulty.
Big Col, if you are going to attempt this then be sure to remove the plug and be very careful, the machine is full of razor sharp edges. The best thing to do is see if you can remove the spider first, then check on the condition of the drum shaft. If that appears OK then report back with the measurements of the bearing diameters.

colin, the measurement of diameter of the shaft is critical it can be 20mm or 22mm if memory serves me right so be very accurate.if however you find the shaft to be damaged in any way, ie, scored or rough to the touch send for a skip. i think the shaft and the inner spider is rivited to the steel drum so it would need a new drum complete with spyder..££££££££

hi again
cheers for the replies and the advice.
I’m currently trying to get the spyder off but it’s proving to be a PITA. It has moved a bit but then it doesn’t want to come anymore.
Even if i do manage to get it off I imagine puting on a new one and lining it up perfectly is gonna be even harder.
I’m currently taking a breather 😳
Also the smell of the dirty water that came out of the hose nearly knocked me out! I’m beginning to think for my health i’d be better off just binning it and buying a new one.

colin…the spyder is awkward to get off as you have found…awkward when the bearings are worn but not broken!!! if the bearings are broken the bits make it really hard to get it off. this in tern indicates that the shaft is no good and the only cure is replacement which i think means a new drum complete with spyder…as above…££££££££££
