I have a bearing change to do later this week on one of these ‘things’

Stainless steel outer drum with red cast iron bearing spider,
    any known drawbacks/problems ?

There a frigging nightmare! (Writer’s opinion)

Look out for thin slices in the tub rear. If there has been alot of play on the inner drum, it will have sliced though the back plate of the tub, as this is the thinnest back plate ever! These sciles are very hard to see, but if you put some water in the machine it becomes obvious.

The other thing, is get ready to snap all your star-headed drill bits. Don’t use ones with holes in the centre for pimbles (they will snap way to easy). You need a big wrench with an adaptor down to a large, solid star-headed bit.

Is there a proper technical term for star-headed stuff?

When you do eventually remove all 8 torx bolts, gentle tap the spider clockwise about an inch to release the little metal wedge that is under the bottom left-hand spider arm.

Do not try and lever the spider away from the s/steel tub ‘cos you will put a hole in it for sure and whatsmore Goatboy will give you a good kicking. Always swear in Italian whilst your doing it ( I can give you a few via PM if you like :rotfl: )

The bearings and seal will knock off the spider easy, but do put loads of high speed grease between the oil/water seal and front bearing as they can squeak a treat at 1600rpm after you’ve nailed and elastoplasted it back together 🙁

    Migliore di fortuna!!!!!!!!!!!

    Torx!! Cheers again Dave

I forgot about dat; wrenching the spider away like some kinda animal tears big holes in that thin plate. The problem is the thinness of that metal.

I’d really like some Italian swearing by pm please.

Thanks for that, I may take my bottle of Strega with me and pour myself a shot just to calm my nerves.

There is no play in the shaft, thankfully the customer is that rare animal that actually rings as soon as she hears a noise, not when the floor has at the back has turned brown, water is running from underneath and she can get her hand between the inner and outer drum.

All advice duly noted, thanks all.

I’ve only done one of these but the only difficulty I encountered was identifying the correct replacement seal, which turned out to be part No. 082696. Merloni seem quite keen to sell you a complete housing but I ordered the seal and pinched the bearings out of other spare kits ( I’ve noticed that it’s usually cheaper to buy a popular kit than buying 2 individual bearings).

Try Halfords Professional Torx bits. 1/2 inch drive and lifetime guarentee. If you break it then just take back to any Halfords and they will replace it. 😀

well, one blood transfusion later 😉

I have removed the 8 torx bolts securing the spider, as usual the hardest to release were the 2 at the bottom right, the most difficult to get at at for a lefty like me. 🙂
the torx bolt securing the drum pulley is proving more of a problem. Before I start to get heavy with this, can anyone confirm that this is a conventional threaded bolt and not a left hand thread, ie: anti-clockwise to release.

Edit. The Halfords kit is good but they don’t supply a T40 with 1/2 inch drive, the 1/2 ones start at T50. The biggest T40 is a 3/8th’s, but they do a converter for 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2 inch.

Yes it is, but a quick blast with a blowtorch will free off the ‘Loctite’ holding it in 😉

Re: Indesit W161 UK Bearing change

Gave it the blowtorch treatment before I tried and this rascal snapped 2 brand new Halfords Professional T40 sockets. 😯

Went back to Halfords and they would have replaced them but they were N/S. 😥 mind you they are made in China. 😉

I think that this one would have seen off a Snap-On T40 .

As the machine is 5 years old the customer decided to have a new machine so I now have a bearing kit for the next time … can’t wait. 😥

I’ve been told that a good whack with a hammer (taking care not to damage the head) breaks the loctite and makes it easier to undo although I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve so far bust 3 torx bits on this pulley.

On day… very soon I guess the manfacturers will weld the pulleys on to stop our little game….mark my words :lesson:

They obviously expect these machines to vibrate a lot more than older ones that didn’t have every bolt doused in Loctite. Perhaps we shoul all be buying Loctite shares?

Re: Indesit W161 UK Bearing change

Normally use an old T40 torx bit in bolt head and give a really good whack with a 2lb hammer. This will free off the loctite and the bolt comes out fairly easily. The bolts in the housing legs don’t seem to be locked in as tight and normally come out with only minor lacerations to the hands and arms. 🙁
