always blowtorch the pully bolt, saves on torx bits, I agree the halfords ones are best, I’ve come across the small tears in the backplate, clear sealant sorts them out. And make sure you tigten the 8 torx screws very tight, in the machine with the cast iron spider, the spider acts as the rear (top) counterweight.

Sorry just to mention. Get some wine bottle corks (the plastic ones are best, cut them into 1 cm slices (widthways), before you start unscrewing the spider, stick the slices on the inside of the back panel screw holes, you know, where those jagged bits of metal have been left by our italian cousins. It saves numerous cuts, I keep a supply of them in my toolbox.

this is beast of a job got 4 stiches in my hand after torx bit broke
have now bought halfords bit and had no probs so far but am more careful now as to were my hand goes if i slip
as a cost save and time you can knock out the torx bits from the halfords sockets and replace them have had to as i keep braking the torx30 on the hotpoint wma spiders

I was going to suggest the Snap-On torx bits but it looks like they don’t do the T30 on its own:

@ phildom
had a talk with a snapon rep he said they all snap and he has to replace them all the time so it seems that this is a failing of the system or more likely the bolt should have a bigger sized torx socket to stop breakage

I’ve used a stout centre punch to get them started before now – that big head means you can deliver some reasonable torque. Mind you, I replace the bolt with a large washer, small washer and a lock washer and a proper 8.8 tensile bolt with a hex head. Let’s face it, it’s Indesit/Ariston, so we’ll be back to do them again in two years time, so make it easy on yourself for next time.
