    Hi All

Just after a quick bit of advice about doing a bearing change on this machine, Am I correct in thinking that if I undo the large band around the back edge of the tub I will be able to remove the back plate with drum and and bearing hub in one go without removing the tub from the machine? Also will I need to replace the bearing hub gasket and if so does it come with Qualtex part QUAUNT18? I am used to doing bearing changes on various plastic tub machines but this is the first metal tub machine that I have been asked about and the first with a replaceable hub so any advice would be appreciated otherwise I shall just have to find out the hard way when I get there.

    Thank you

Yes inner drum and back plate come out,not a bad job to do.
When pulling the back plate retainer ring back up with the bolt keep tapping the metal retainer ring around it’s outer circunference to persuade it to pull tight, and make it easier too.

Thanks for the help guys – will be going to attack the machine on Wednesday, I guessed that it shouldn’t be to bad a job but thought I would check about anything that would catch me out first.

The black rubber tub gasket may well pose a problem when you put it all back together. Ideally replace it as no matter how tight you compress the barrel clamp the ruddy thing could well leak, drip on the motor and you’ll wish you chose mark’s advice. 😉

Re: Indesit W855WG – Bearing Change

Well I have changed the bearings on this today with the only hiccup in the actual bearing change being that I hadn’t realised that the spider was riveted to the drum and would take a fair bit of cursing/swearing and drilling before it would release. I made sure that the clamp band was tight and that it does not leak from either band or gasket of bearing hub – unfortunately it appears that something else has decided to start leaking but I am struggling to work out what.

The leak appears to originate somewhere at the front of the machine as it is a drip off of the very front edge of the tub onto the concrete block then the floor (Front centre), I have pulled the door seal back but couldn’t find any damp/damage there – I have also checked the inlet hose to the tub and again found no damp, same with the sump hose – in desperation I have put talc powder directly under/around each item but it isn’t getting wet – does anyone have any thoughts on this (Other than scrap as this lady owner wants it fixed) – my only other thought which I haven’t yet had time to fully check out is if there may be a pinhole rust spot behind the front weight if so how could I seal it?

    Thank you

memory is failing me on these but did the heater come out with the backplate? If so you may have took a bit of enamled outer tub with it.

yes heater comes out with backplate – you mean that it would have rusted itself to the tub and then caused a hole on removal?

IIRC?…doesn’t this model have a heater post that bolts through the tub?

there is a bracket that goes over the heater about a quarter of the way in from the front but it doesn’t appear to be these bolts that are leaking (unless it has another that I haven’t yet found) but something right on the front edge.

Darn! Then it’s looking like a rust hole in that part of the tub I’ m afraid. It’s gonna involve taking the drum out again and taking a look at where the hole might be?

    Take along some metal putty……..

Re: Indesit W855WG – Bearing Change

Turns out that is leaking from next to one of the concrete weight supports – it is only a pinhole leak but the damn thing won’t seal no matter how much metal putty I put on it – I have now put some more on and covered that with debor and left it to set overnight so we will see what happens in the morning – if it continues to leak then I am into damage limitation as far as my reputation goes.

Re: Indesit W855WG – Bearing Change

Buy a fibreglass repair kit from your local motor spares store and fibreglass a little patch over the hole either inside or out. Works on both metal and plastic tubs!

    Regards.

I shall have to remember that for next time I come across one of these (not that I have ever done any fibre glassing yet), this particular machine ended up scrapped.
