ParticipantHi there, I hope someone can kindly help me.
The washing machine part of this appliance is giving me no problems at all. It is just the drying that is making my washing smell disgusting. It smells like a cross between wet dog and smelly armpits, to put it mildly.
I have run a boil wash with white vinegar in case it was old water sitting in the machine for a long time (but surely that would make all the washing smell even if it didn’t go in the dryer after?), made sure the dispenser drawer isn’t mucky and that the rubber seal is clean.
I have tried drying with fabric softener, without fabric softener and with tumble drier sheets and all give the same smelly results.
The washer/drier came with the flat – it’s not inbuilt but freestanding and is 2 years old maximum. The flat however was empty for approx. 9 months.
I do hope someone can give me some clues if I can get this sorted out.
Thank you in advance.

Vinegar is a complete waste of time. Its possible that the whole of the dryer assembly is clogged and the innards of the machine are full of gunge.
A read of THIS article is a good starting point. 😉
The only way to clear the dryer is by stripping down the dryer assembly. Be sure to remove the plug if you intend to open it up.
Smells are caused by constant low temp washes and using liquid detergents.

Thank you very much for your reply and taking time to help. I found the article very enlightening and shall not use liquid detergent again -although I’ve only used this particular machine a few times myself.
So, in essence, the Afresh product won’t clear up my particular problem? My washing does not smell – it’s only when items have been dried you see.
I’m a lady pensioner so wouldn’t be able to take the machine apart myself.
Do you think it’s worthwhile me getting someone in to try and solve the problem or to cut my losses and get a new machine? If that is the case it will have to be another washer/drier as I only have room for that. I can’t afford top of the range but wonder if there is one that is more recommended than others in an economy range?
Also, do you know (and I have read the manual from cover to cover and can’t find this out) is the one I got a condenser drier, as I can’t find anywhere to remove lint so I am presuming it is?
Sorry for all the questions. 😳

If it is bunged up in the dryer assembly then it should be worth getting it cleaned out, not a difficult job for a decent engineer. Try the link at the bottom of this post if you don’t know anyone local.
It is a condenser dryer but not a very good one, in fact there are no good budget or mid range washer dryers. The £1000+ Miele is the only washer dryer that deserves to be labelled ‘good’.
THIS article will explain.
NB. Sadly most of the links in that article are out of date. 😥
Even though your washing only smells after drying the build up of gunge in the main drum could still be causing the smell on your clothes as the heat is forced through the washing inside the drum.

Just a quick update as I think this may help narrow down where there could be a possible problem.
The last time I took my towels to my daughters to get them dried was after I had washed and dried them here and because of the atrocious smell they had to be WASHED AND DRIED at their house.
This time I WASHED the clothes in MY machine and only DRIED them in THEIR machine. They smell fine.
So do you think that definitely narrows it down to a problem with the drier of my machine and not a blockage? Is it overheating do you think thus causing the smell?

It still points towards a blocked or gunked up dryer chamber and filter.
Overheating would not cause a smell.

I am having the same problem with my indesit washer dryer unit. Mine is a week old and has been smelling during the drying cycle only as well. Indesit will send a technician in a few days – I’ll let you know what they say.

I bought my washer/dryer (indesit iwdd7143s about 4 years ago and have had this problem since the beginning – so I just ended up using it to wash and spin and then hung everything up – however it occurs to me – that this is definitely a problem so I’m intrigued to here what anyone actually did that has solved the problem? Is it a heating element fault? Or something?
Thanks
Ric

The problem is caused by damp fluff lining the inside of the condenser duct. Mould and mildew form in the warm damp environment. The only cure is to remove and clean that condenser unit. Also cleaning the outer drum with Affresh or Dr Beckman as a dirty drum also gets very smelly when warm air enters the drum during the long drying process.
The situation is made very much worse if owners only use the dryer part of the washing cycle once in a blue moon AND do no carry out a regular service wash. 😕
