ParticipantHi all,
I have a French Indesit front loading washing machine. Out of the blue the drum has stopped turning, It fills fine when you start a wash cycle but then nothing happens and eventually (10-15 mins later) all the lights start flashing.
I have checked the obvious problems such as the drive belt, the motor is a three phase induction motor so has no brushes to replace, and I’ve taken the control module out and checked it for black spots.
My question is, is there any other part that could be responsible, such as a fuse or a sensor. If there isn’t how do I go about diagnosing whether or not it is the control module or the module – I have a multimeter I can use to test for a current.Any help appreciated.
Thanks,

Have you checked the capacitor?

The capacitor on the control module? I wouldn’t know how to check it, however if I leave the machine turned on and then unplug it from the mains the LED’s stay on for a while, is this proof that the capacitor is still working?

Nope,I mean the mains capacitor, sometimes called the mains filter/suppressor.
Normally white in colour and cylindrical shaped, with electrical terminals on top.December 15, 2012 at 4:54 pm #386362floydhead

Hi again,
I had a look at the mains suppressor, I couldn’t see anything obvious however there was a very slight black tint to some of the soldered joints coming from the ‘coil'(?). But surely if this part was faulty the machine wouldn’t work at all?

Quite right, I should ignore the mains filter and concentrate on a fault more likely associated with the control module.:(

If its the control module for sure then at least I can just order the part and feel confident. Trouble is I’d like to rule out a problem with the motor first, however I’ve no idea how to test it with a multimeter. I’d be amazed if it was the motor as induction motors are normally bombproof as far as I was aware and the machine isn’t old.

Nothing Indesit is bombproof (Google up EXPLODING INDESIT) quite the opposite applies in fact. The motor should have a thermal trip embedded in the windings I would think? To confirm you merely need to ensure you have continuity between all connections.

I do have continuity between all the connection, does that mean I can rule out the motor? It doesn’t even twitch so I presume it’s receiving nothing at all from the control module.

I would be pointing the finger then at the module……..oh dear…..another one for the skip methinks.:(

Well the machine’s only a year or so old and I can get a replacement speed control module for £80-90 so I think I’ll skip the skip for now! Unless there’s something I’m missing?
Why should this happen anyway?December 15, 2012 at 9:28 pm #386369floydhead

Hmm, The replacement module I found isn’t actually for my machine sadly. However I have removed the module and had a very close look at it and I can’t see anything wrong with it, not a even a mark surely there would be some evidence damage? It even smells ok!
Going back to the motor, it makes a slight burring noise when turned, is this normal? I shouldn’t have thought that there are any parts that should make a noise. Aren’t the only moving parts the bearings?December 16, 2012 at 10:04 am #386370madangler1

It’s the boards trust me, rear you will see a sign of damage in the 3 phase ones.

If I buy a new module will it just plug in and work, I’m worried they might need programming or something as they seem to fit multiple models.

Sorry need to be programmed by an Indesit engineer or a independent with the equipment.
