ParticipantNewbie with a washer/dryer problem:
Our totally trouble-free Indesit Washer/Dryer WD10 has just stopped working. The symptoms are that the programme dial stops at number ‘8’ and will not move beyond. This was preceded by running a “Daily Wash” from Programme 8, which didn’t not progress beyond the rinse stage and just kept the drum churning.
I have so far:
1. Cleaned the pre-chamber and the drain hose from the pump, both of which had some hard soap in it but otherwise no hard objects. The hose was significantly blocked at the outlet end however.
2. Lifted the top off the machine and checked the wiring; the connections to what appears to be a Capacitor or Rectifier on the top of the drum had some blackening around the terminals, but there was no sign of melting or damage to the wiring.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Participantmore than likely a heater problem to be honest
simple test with a multimeter
plug out first, and its on the back of the drum, just above the motor

Thanks for the reply helo; I don’t actually have a multimeter (yet), although I have used one in the past. If I get a cheap one, what am I checking for on the heater module? If you could give me a couple of pointers…

Heater should read approx 25ohms when split from from the circuit – with the plug out, of course.

Many thanks Penguin, I have now bought a digital multimeter and will check out the component in the next few days. I’ll reply with some feedback when I know the outcome!

Penguin, helo,
Have removed the heater element, and checked the resistance. The reading is 30.2 ohms.Is this faultly then? Many thanks for your help.

I really would appreciate a reply to this thread, our washing is starting to mount up!
I have asked around with one or two appliance repair places, and they say that it sounds more like the PCB is faulty and probably too uneconomical to repair.
Would any of you experts care to comment?
Thanks.

I know it’s too late now but for others reading this thread I would advise you never to remove a washing machine heater unless you need to see inside the tub to remove a foreign object or you know the heater is faulty. They can be a pig of a job to get back in and properly sealed.
The reading you got on the heater is about right, if it had failed you would get a reading of infinity ohms. It could well be a circuit board fault but it is also worth doing resistance checks on the 3 solenoids of the cold water valve. Disconnect a wire from a coil before doing the resistance check, all 3 should show similar readings.August 21, 2008 at 2:06 pm #260073GrumpyOldGit

Thanks Phidom, I’ll check out the cold water valve as you suggest. But from my checking spares for this it seems that there’s not a lot available nowadays; our local appliance spares place has this model down as “obsolete”.
I guess this is a case of buy a new one and move on. It does seem a shame to take another old machine to the tip when a lot of it may well be sound though 🙁 .

GOG. Don’t just assume that because one place doesn’t stock certain parts, they’re not available!
SHOP AROUND!…Use the spares facility here on the Forum and email a request if your part isn’t listed as “stock”Check the heater resistance, conductor to sheath (either terminal to outer case/bracket)…it should be infinite (ideally, you’d Megger this, but you just got a multimeter)
All tests…UNPLUG APPLIANCE….Isolate the component from the electronics.
finally, if your old machine really IS dead…..DO NOT buy another Indesit!
The badge may be the same, the white box it’s fixed to,is a rubbish-bin.
(a forum search will save you a fortune!

Thanks Steve, take your point. Incidentally, what does GOG and Megger mean? I’ll do some more checks on the components, but I guess what I really need is a manual to know what the m/m readings should be!
I guess we have been lucky with our Indesit; it’s managed to last six and a half years with no trouble until now. From what I hear the life expectancy of a lot of washers is around 4 years or so.
Are you really a cockney….? Living in Oldham…. 😯 ??

GOG= Grumpy Old Git 😀
Megger- a test-device which injects a higher than normal voltage to the circuitry under test, indicating the leakage, or lack thereof.
can be used to test any conductor’s insulation from another IE L-N…N-E….L-E
Old ones used to be hand-cranked…unsuspecting victims would hold the clips ,you’d tweak the crank-handle 😈
Really, an Essex boy,been here since’ 76 it’s quite nice, I may stay for a bit.September 4, 2008 at 8:18 am #260077GrumpyOldGit
ParticipantRe: Indesit WD10 Problems
Final footnote to this saga: after messing around for over a week testing various bits, trying to see what error code was flashed up, and flooding the conservatory after the drain hose flipped out of the bucket, I have taken this load of electrical sewage to the tip.
Never did find out what error code it was; every time I ran it up it produced another problem. First the dial clicked round and round and didn’t stop; then the thing stopped at the rinse cycle and wouldn’t move; then it just sat at the starting position and did nothing.
Now I know what you mean, Steve, about the Indesit being a rubbish bin with a badge on it.
But thanks for all your help guys, before the day of execution! 🙂
