ParticipantMy Indesit WE14 fails to start it’s cycle (no fill or motor activity) although the time display does start to count down as normal EXCEPT that the key/lock symbol is not showing, although the door IS locked.
Then, after a few minutes, the time countdown is replaced by the message “door” and the door remains locked (but, again, with no key/lock symbol on the display). No other error messages or codes appear.
To open the door, I turn off the machine and, after a minute or two, the lock releases.
For all other functions the button presses seem to produce the correct display. The internal cables and connectors show no damage or corrosion.
Is this fault likely to be due to the door lock or the electronics board?
Any advice would be much appreciated. I have searched the forum prior to posting but could find no answers. Just in case, I cleaned out the pump as that seems to be the biggest cause of problems with these Indesits but, no, that didn’t have any affect on my door problem.

If only that were true, pump blockages are one of the biggest causes of problems on all makes of machine. This is due to careless, won’t check the pockets, I’m far to stressed and busy to do that, type of user that is often the norm these days. 😥
The biggest cause of problems on Indesit machines is just about everything from very unreliable electronics, thin stainless steel or completely sealed plastic outer drums, weak drum supports, bearings, pressure switches etc. Sometimes worn motor brushes can effect the controls as well.
It does sound like it may be a control fault, the Indesit engineers have dedicated software on their laptops, they can plug this into the test port at the back to fault diagnose, sadly this software is not available to the independent trade.

Jim, thanks for the great reply – wish I’d been aware of Indesit’s rep before I bought it 4yrs or so ago. I was desperately broke at the time, so, I guess I didn’t have a lot of choice but in the following years I’ve opted for an AEG dryer and a Bosch dishwasher, both of which I’m very happy with.
Well, I’m out of guarantee on the Indesit so, if I remember correctly, I’m looking at just under £100 for a Merloni engineer to come out and if the logic board, or even just the door electronics need to be replaced, that will probably be quite a bit more, possibly even a second call-out.
The ironic thing is that, while it was under guarantee, the one thing that did go wrong a couple of times was that the belt slipped off and that was something I was able to fix myself easily enough.
By the sounds of it, even if I shell out £150 or whatever to repair it, some other damn thing will wear out soon enough anyway.
Looks as if the best thing to do would be to follow the advice here and on Washer Help and put the repair money towards buying a new, higher quality machine. I’m still trying to get my head around all this but it sounds as if the best washing machine bets are Miele, Bosch, AEG and the ISE ones you’re promoting. A quick trawl through Comet also alerted me to LG’s machines which certainly sound very innovative and are backed up with a 5 year parts & labour warranty, suggesting their pretty confident regarding their quality.
One thing I would really appreciate advice on: is this a terrible time of the year to buy a washing machine?
Obviously, most consumer goods get sold at a healthy margin in the run-up to Christmas but I’m not sure if this applies to white goods as well – perhaps the prices of these big ticket items remain relatively stable? And, also, I usually comparison shop online, perhaps that ultra-competitive arena remains equally cheap all year round?
So, is it worth waiting for the post-Christmas sales? Given that it’s already the 6th and I’ll be heading back home to Ireland for a week on the 20th, perhaps I’d be better off using the local laundrette for the next fortnight? As I say, I’m thinking of shelling out for a high-quality machine (£500-ish?), so, any discount would make a real difference.
Again, I appreciate any and all advice.

Hi Donnacha, for AEG read Electrolux owned, Zanussi made appliances.
Have a read of this, in particular the LG/Samsung articles. Korean machines have a reputation in the trade for being all bells & whistles, up front flash. What we folk in Lancashire would call ‘fur coat & no knickers’ 😆
The ISE or mid to upper range Bosch are sound investments, if money is not a problem then Meile is the creme de la creme.
As for the best place to buy, cost alone should not be your ultimate goal, in most cases a local independant retailer/service operation will give you very competitive prices, fast delivery and expert installation, on top of this they will give far better back up than the faceless sheds and online retailers.
As an instance of this.
Mr X rings Star Supplies today, “My machine ( Indesit) has failed again and I want to get rid of it, unfortunately my clothes are stuck in it with the water”. Star Supplies deliver an ISE machine later this afternoon, contact me by e-mail, I ring the customer and arrange to call first thing tomorrow morning to recover his clothes from the Indecent[sic] machine and install his new ISE washer. Star Supplies will call back later at no charge to remove his old machine.
Need I say more.
Jim.

The motor brushes on these machines can have an effect on the controls, not difficult to check/change brushes, please remove the plug if you intend to go inside or try the link at the bottom of this post to see if we have someone who can help.
