ParticipantOur Indesit WG1034T leaks a lot from the beginning of the cycle. It appears to leak from the rear, I think from the right.
We have had problems with it leaking a bit in the past, and the landlord has sent many Comet engineers out. They told us before that we were using too much fabric softener and powder and this was causing leaking due to blocking the soap drawer, and scraped some gunge out of the soap dispenser. We stopped using fabric softener and started using detergents that go in the drum and not in the dispenser.
It continued to leak a bit, and started acting up when spinning also. It does not always spin, though usually the drum turns during the wash. In order to have a load spin correctly we had to restrict it to little more than one pair of trousers and a few socks, and only use it once every three days or so.
More Comet engineers came, each one never even taking a look at the leak and simply pulling out the soap dispenser and rinsing it, then leaving. One even called my landlord and told him I was being stupid.
We dealt with the washing machine as it was for a fair few months, but the other day when I tried to do a load it leaked a lot (by a lot, I mean pints. I don’t know whether you’d consider that a lot). It now does that whenever you try to use it, so obviously we don’t.
I’m sure the landlord will send out another Comet engineer, and I want to know if there’s something obvious that’s wrong with the machine that I can point him in the direction of, and whether there’s something magical you can say to make a repairman listen to you rather than tell you to cut down on fabric softener.
Thanks ever so much, any advice would be appreciated.

There are three different versions of this appliance, each type will have its own problems.
However, you should advise your landlord that the appliance is well out of its guarantee period, so it is in his own interest to get a local independent service engineer to investigate this. The hourly rate will certainly be less that sending for Comet, and the engineer will be sufficiently interested and motivated to inspect the appliance properly.
If the machine is now leaking significant amounts of water, it will probably be fairly easy to track down.
HTH,

I apologise, I should have given the full product number from the label on the back, which is WG 1034 TP G. Unfortunately the landlord has a 5 year service warrantee with Comet, which only expires in February, so until then it’s Comet I have to deal with.
Thanks again, I’m guessing that there’s no one problem it’s very likely to be, so I’ll just wait until the engineer turns up and hope he takes me seriously.
Cheers.

Hi shortbread,
I am a Comet engineer(hence the moniker) & I am very motivated(ahem, thanks penguin), also I am ex-Indesit.
The leak is down to the rear tank clamp band, when you call us out again demand that the engineer takes off the back panel, no faffing around with dispenser’s, and that he checks all around the band, he will find the dripping just above the motor, hence the intermittant spin.
The only cure is a new front & rear tank, as its plastic it expands and contracts through the wash, after a period of time this can cause the clamp band to slightly loosen.
I am sorry we have not diagnosed properly up till now, more product training required 😳
If the engineer contradicts this please get him to call Bez at 368, he will know the service centre.
Cheers.

Thanks, you’ve been really helpful 🙂
I don’t know when the engineer will be here (landlord being super-slow due to holiday) but when he shows up I’ll try to be as assertive as possible and suggest this. If he won’t listen, as I am just a girl, I’ll suggest he calls you.
Any idea how long this will take to fix? My flatmate and I both have a bedroom-full of dirty clothes but the laundrette is a whole 200 yards away so it’d be good to know whether the walk is worth it, hehe.
Thanks again, I’m really excited to hopefully get a working machine at some point.

No problems, love your biscuits by the way 😉
He will definitely need a new motor with him, tell your landlord its not rotating or spinning at all but is draining the water, he should come with a new motor and speed control module.
There is a chance he can silicone seal the clamp band & re-tighten, that will get you up and running again, if its a really bad leak however we will need to replace the tank, that will mean ordering the bits, the launderette will get a bit of usage.
Save all your receipts, and post them off to the service centre address in the top left hand corner of your job sheet he will give you.
Be as assertive as you can, we do actually like that….errr some of us 😯

Thanks very much, I’ve told the landlord that it isn’t rotating but that it’s draining, so hopefully that’ll encourage the repairman to bring a new motor.
It turns out that the landlord has moved the washing machine into our flat from another, so the policy isn’t registered to the right address. Therefore, I can’t even get an engineer booked until they sort that out tomorrow 🙁 Interesting that that has never caused problems before, and also that the certificate of insurance we hold has this address on it.
Anyway I guess that’s not really relevant right now. Thanks again for all the advice, I’ll let you know what happens when we finally get someone out to look at the machine. And I promise to act assertive 🙂

Update:
The Comet man just came out. He didn’t talk much, but after tilting the machine and looking at it for about 5 seconds said “Dinnae use this machine, it’s knackered” which was actually really nice to hear considering all the rubbish we’ve put up with over it.
Bez, you were right 🙂 The sheet the man gave me reads “Tub seal gone leaking onto motor also suspension leg ripped out of position on cabinet leaving large hole in cabinet. Requires tub motor cabinet.”
He mumbled something before running out of the door about us getting a new machine, so I’m happy with that. Shame it’ll be another Indesit, but as long as it doesn’t pee on the floor I don’t care.
Thanks again everyone for the help.
