ParticipantI’ve got an Indesit WG1130T washer that has been intermittently tripping my RCD, but only when the heater is active. A good example is starting a wash cycle (which will complete fine) with the thermostat set to 20 deg. If you turn the thermostat up until it clicks, sometimes the RCD will trip (which being on my consumer unit turns off the entire house). I’ve come to the conclusion that the element must be leaking current, so I’d like to replace it. I’ve inspected the wiring etc and all looks sound so I think it’s the element itself. Unfortunately I don’t have a megger to test it on it’s own to determine how much leakage there is.
Does anyone have any bullet points on how to replace the element, in particular does the element unscrew from the underside of the drum or do you need to somehow remove the element from the inside of the drum – if so, how? Do the replacement elements come with a gasket or it this something I will need to get seperately? I’m a competent DIYer, but thought I would ask the experts first!
Many thanks

you should be able to buy a complete element pretty easily i am sure someone will get back to you on that but just find the element, unplug first of course, theny ou should take off 3 wires (make note of where they go) unscrew the ten mm nut and gently coax it out, some come straight out some are more tricky, then replace the new element making sure to line it up with a bracket inside the tub (you should feel it as you pull out and push in the new element) then tighten and keep an eye on it the first time through for leaks.
although most elements don’t just go wrong on their own it is normally a symptom of a greater fault usually the drum bearings, has your machine been noisy recently?
or maybe even a coin spun around and hit it.
let me know how you get on and any problems just ask. 😀August 25, 2006 at 10:45 am #186465leeby

Great, that sounds easy enough! This is the only problem I have noticed on the machine, everything else is working a treat. I’ve read somewhere that using washing liquids can be bad in terms of corroding the element (and the insulation) – that’s all I ever use, and yep I’m bad as I’ve never done a cleaning cycle! :rolls:
I’ll get an element on order and give it a try. I’m a qualified electronic engineer so I’m happy with the safety side!
Thanks
