On these machines the multiposition s/w is effectivly a set of eight resistor ‘chips’ which are selected at different switch positions. Each setting combines a different set of resistors to give a unique output resistance for each position.

Presumably this is presented to a 4 bit analogue to digital convertor on the microcontroller and converted to its equivalent binary value informing the controller of the selected position.

Common fault – Machine dead due to damaged or bad wiper contact.

To test these:- The connector has five pads, the two outer pads 1 & 7 on one side of the board connect to the timer advance motor and should show a resistance of about 6K5 ohms.

On the other side of the board are three inner pads. The middle of these is common and a resistance should be measured between this pad and either of the outer pads. This resistance will vary as the knob is rotated, one side increasing the other decreasing.

    Hope you find this useful.

That being the case Andy, what is the cure?..New Selector Switch?..or a squirt of Electrolube?

At around £15 + VAT these are not a fortune to replace but having said that they are quite easy to repair too as they come apart easily. There are a few plastic clips to spring to gain access. The wiper is a small copper contact that bridges two circular tracks, one being continuous and the other segmented. As long as the wiper has’nt broken it is easily re- bent / shaped to make a satisfactory contact.
