I was hoping to buy a rangemaster 90 cooker in the next few days-but I may have a problem. The kitchen it will be going into is l shaped. On the short wall that is the only place we can put wall cupboards- and on the long wall it is nearly all in front of a long rectangular window. I think i read somewhere that it is best not to put a cooker in front of a window-but we have no choise-also do you have to install a exractor hood over them-this wont be possible?

Re: Installing a (Range ) Cooker by a window?

The hood is optional Teresa, not required as such just nice to have as it (if fitted correctly) removes a lot of steam and odours.

In front of a window for a cooker, especially gas, isn’t great mainly because if you have a gas cooktop then the burners (the small ones are worst) may well get blown out if the window is open, even just a little. And, obviously, steam and cooking odour can be blown back into the kitchen which isn’t ideal.

There is no regulation to say you cant have a cooker in front of a window, obviously there if for curtains behind it though, are you having the 90 with the glass lid ?

Presumably if i just keep the window shut when the gas hob is on it would be ok.

Trouble is, after a while, you’ll get comfortable using it, it’ll become part of the furniture and one day……. you’ll forget.

WSTS’s point is that the model with the glass lid would, with the lid up, act as a wind break.

An openable window may be a requirment re- ventilation of appliance.
😕 Consult the user manual ❗

GregIn the gas regs an openable window is always a requirement…. but it doesnt have to be open, otherwise they would ask for permanent ventilation.

Sorry, wsts is correct 😳 it IS required OR an alternative opening which opens to the outside air.
I was confusing it with the permanent vents that may be required depending on room volume. 🙂

I spoke to Rangemaster today, they confirmed it would be ok as long as the window was sealed(no draughts) which it is.We have a utility room next to the kitchen,so I could just open the window on that for extra ventilation. Thanks for all your help.

Re: Installing a (Range ) Cooker by a window?

After speaking to a kitchen planner and input from OH ,we decided that aesthetically, it might not look quite right to other people in front of the window, (if we ever had to sell the house,we dont plan to,but who knows),so have re jigged the storage and put it on the short wall. We need to buy a hood now to finish off the look ,so just off to read the section on here about extractors. I know Range master do a black one for about £400 but hadnt planned to buy one.Need to do some more research.
