ParticipantDoes anyone know the difference between an insulation tester costing around £80.00 and £300.00? They both read to do the same?

Like the difference between a £150 washing machine and one that costs £550 I should imagine? 😕 By cheap, you get cheap, stump up to the top tier and you get a tester that is far more efficient, reliable and above all resilient to the rigours of a long and hard life. 😉

the difference is the values you get on the screen! and how accurate they are! ie the £80 one will be so inaccurate and have less features than the £300 one
go with a fluke every time or megger if you want decent IR test results, the same is said with multimeters.
in saying all that if its just for blatting a 2.5mm or 1.5mm 3 core on short cable runs it should be ok!
hope this helps

I got one second hand in as new condition for £40 on e-bay. The new price is about £400! It’s a beauty. I take it in my shoulder bag when I leave my bike outside the supermarket, ’cause I’d be gutted if it got nicked!

Got an 80 odd quid one recently as a spare, cos I had one half inched.
Chinese one from CPC in a lovely yellow rubber case.
Must admit it is every bit as good as my Metrahit 16i which I originally got for £350, got a brand new replacement off ebay for £120.
Longevity I’m not sure about but features etc its good.

Snap! Mine’s a Metrahit 16I too. Thought they were a bit rare over here being German. Very sad to hear that it’s not better than a Chinese one!
🙁

lol 😆 fluke or megger!!! everytime!
your £80 quid ones dont comply with uk regs check the ce markings nor do most of them come with fused leads (uk regs)
nor do they have auto discharge and most decent ones now are multi units with ohms as well
i have worked on a lot of sites with inspectors who will not allow readings from anything but fluke or megger (or equivelent) and must be calibrated with the correct leads!
you can buy a decent megger (second hand from ebay for £80) infact i have a couple and fluke multimeters if you want them?
i no longer use them as i have 2 17th edition units! will post them to you if you need them
