    Hello all.

I’ve just come off the telephone from John Lewis, who have agreed to refund in full my purchase of their branded Fisher & Paykel double dishdrawer that failed to make it through its first week. 🙁

The previous machine was the integrated version, which lasted 7 & 1/2 years with intermittent flooding problems due to the weak lid motors (replaced twice); apparently not a bad record considering some peoples’ experiences. I got quite proficient at whipping out the bottom drawer, towelling up the water and then waving the hair-drier over the PCB.

I’d gone for the JL version as I liked the concept and convenience of 2 drawers and I had thought the problems might have been ironed out, but it was a triumph of hope over experience.

Reading through this site and a couple of old copies of Which, it would appear that if I don’t buy a Miele, then Siemens/Bosch would be the next best choice. (As an aside, I heard from an old friend that his mother’s 20-odd year old Miele cooker was replaced in a refit, and the engineers arranged for it to be sent back to Miele as a pristine example of thier manufacturing and customer use – she is Swiss, which might explain its state…)

I would prefer to buy from JL for piece of mind and to make up for their lost sale and expense, so either the Siemens SN65E000GB (£559) or the Bosch SGV46M03GB (£519) are tempting, together with purchasing the 5 year warranty

However, I also see that a web-based company are doing the Siemens SHV55M03GB for £380 (a claimed £200 reduction), which I cannot find on Siemens’ web-site, so assume it is an older model. The saving I can then put towards an independent warranty or take a chance.

Alternatively, I put my hand back in my wallet and make up the difference for the cheapest Miele (Miele G1173Vi £789 + £80 5 year warranty), assuming Miele aren’t offering free 5 years parts and labour.

Would anyone care to offer thoughts and views?
    Many thanks,
    Lex

    Hi Lex.

It`s well documented within these pages that the build quality of the Miele is second to none and the guarantees are some of the best around. Longevity of life is also excellent. The issues are that service information to non Miele agents is not very easy to get hold of unless you happen to be friendly with one of their own. Also the cost of spare parts are hugely more expensive than any other manufacturer that I know of.

The Bosch and Siemens machines (same stable 😉 ) are probably the next best, Siemens products are slightly higher spec`d than Bosch and while slightly higher priced they offer better value for money as they have the added bonus of the five year warranty.

The only concern I would have with the web offer of the discontinued model would be does it still come with the five year warranty. If it does then that would probably be my choice. If not I would then go for the SN65E000GB.

    HTH 🙂

    Don,
Thanks for the prompt response; must be due to the fact you’re just down the road from me… 😉

No, the discontinued model only comes with 1 year manufacturer’s warranty, hence the thought of the savings going towards either an independent warranty or the piggy bank for the first problem after 12m.

I’m leaning towards the Siemens, plus £80 to increase the warranty from 2 to 5 years with the peace of mind that JL are involved. Whichever, I’ll be waiting for the uplift and credit before I commit Mr Plastic.

A good safe bet. I can`t see JLP mucking you around on that one to be fair.

    Don 🙂
