ParticipantHi all,
Just found the forum, seems a great site to learn from.I’m having a problem with my kenwood ck740 range cooker, the grill elements on both ovens only heat up/glow red in the centre of the element. I’ve replaced one element and it does the same thing so I think I can rule the element out.
The elements have separate feeds for each loop (they are the dual element type I think) and an earth connection.
I turned the grill on and there is voltage to the centre element section but none to the outer section (same on both ovens).
Tracing the wires I see they run to what looks like a large connection point with many spade connections located behind the oven knobs at the front (part of the inner shaft), they also run to a series of thermostats and cut offs (TOC).
There appears to be two different types, a set with flat connectors rated on them at 150 centigrade and two rated at 80 centigrade that have bent back style connectors..I continuity tested them and the 150 one shows a closed circuit so the multimeter beeps, the 80 ones do not beep and show an open circuit.
Could these be causing the grill element issue? am I being stupid and is that how the elements should work? Any help appreciated, apologies for the big post but thought best to add as much info as possible 🙁

I am afraid, I think that you will find this to be the case. 😉
A lot of grill elements only offer infra-red cooking in the central area and not on the outer circuit and that’s perfectly normal.

Many thanks for the help kwatt, I did read that some only glow in the middle but what confused me was the lack of voltage to the outer rings? I didn’t test the voltage on normal oven settings and now I think about it I should have, could the outer element ring be for normal cooking (I.e. Fan assisted top and bottom heating)?
Feel a bit of a donut if that’s the case lol 🙂September 20, 2013 at 6:32 pm #401534kwatt

Yes, that’s the case, the outer elements will still heat but to a lesser degree as they are largely used for heating the oven for baking/cooking and not grilling. Essentially, they are not designed to “glow” and cook using infra-red heat.
A large number of continental ovens are this way as we’re odd in the UK being one of the few nations that cooks with the grill, so I am told.

Really appreciate the help, thanks for being gentle with me on the stupidity front too lol, I’ve had the oven years but for some reason thought they all glowed! It was the zero voltage to the outer element ring that did me, I was convinced something was wrong. I should stick to my day job, still it’s good to learn 🙂
Thanks again, very kind of you to help 🙂September 20, 2013 at 7:04 pm #401536kwatt

No problem and don’t worry, a lot of people get confused by that one.
