ParticipantWell,
I’m finally going to do it.
I have bought a domain name and want to get a website but after sifting through lots of sites I can’t find a template that suits our trade and I’m confused.
Has any of you switched on lads details of a good template or site where I can download and design the rest myself.
Hope this makes sense ‘cos my brain is a bit dead now.
Thanks

I used these:

Have a look at my ‘www’ below.
You could probably make it alot more fancy but, for me, its enough.

Or like me – I bought a domain name and had it for 6 years. The company ‘maintaining’ my site (all one page of it) sent me a renewal which I didn’t recieve. I had changed my e’mail address as it was getting spammed into oblivion and I informed them of the change. It transpires they are leaving messages on the wrong e’mail account. I surprisingly enough, don’t reply; so without writing to me (they have my postal address) they sell my domain on to another company. When I found my site had gone, I phoned them and asked why – lots of verbal shoulder – shrugging goes on – they were clearly not interested in retrieving it for me. The company (unredeemednames.com owned by greyhare.com) now has my domain and repeatedly fails to reply to my request to return it. I have even said I would purchase it again. Still no reply. Their website says that selling domain names “is a low priority”. My site was low traffic and for customer reference only so what use is it to them? Surely they would make money from selling domains….I’m offering to buy it……..it’s not rocket science. Stupid, incompetent bunch of complete tossers……the lot of ’em. 👿
I have abandoned all hope of a website with my own domain (Aqualectric.com) as I cannot seem to retrieve it. It is currently lying dormant with adverts on it. 😈
Am I losing any trade from lack of website? Not really. I work within a 30 mile radius so service requests from San Francisco are likely to be turned down. It’s the fact that anyone on the net seems to be able to do anything to you and you are powerless to stop it. I don’t have the time to trawl through “Make your own website” or whatever book is required, I’ll just live without it.
Sorry about the rant, but these faceless individuals seem to have the ability to take your domain without you having any redress. Would I like my domain back? Yes; more out of principle than anything else. I paid for it; I wasn’t aware that anyone else could just take it off me forever.
On the whole, I don’t like the net; it’s a front door to your life that has a lock that is continually being picked by invisible people with false identities. It is lucky if you’re aware when it happens and of course, able to stop it happening when it does……Steve.

Aqualectric.co.uk is available for just £6 so why not just buy it and you’re all set.:D

Oh yes you are Steve, all your competitors have at least got on the web and most of them don’t even have a website! At least register (for free) with touchlocal.com to get your business listed.
A lot has been discussed here on UKW on the subject of creating your own website. Back in 2004 a heated debate ensued and does make fascinating reading looking back on it. (use the search button to see what I mean)
Most DIY websites are pretty rubbish at best. Some created by specialist companies are smarter looking though can be expensive. Whichever path you take has to be regarded as positive and ultimately will promote your business in today’s marketplace who’s main information highway is the Internet. Everyone uses it, there’s barely a home in the UK that hasn’t got Internet connection, it’s the way forward and shouldn’t be ignored. 😉

Thanks for all the input but having tried most of Monday to design a site have given up with a headache. Office live…3 hours and a nice design but microsoft wouldn’t let me do anything with it and then said I had no email inbox on Hotmail or Office live. wasted and lost it 😈
Several others tried and all got so far then lost my way. I have decided to get a proper one designed and go from there.
Thanks again but I won’t try again.
Ps. Seamy I really liked yours and slightly based mine on it before it went wrong.Hope you wouldn’t have minded 😳April 14, 2009 at 4:16 pm #283071admin
KeymasterThe company that we use are extremely efficient. They are called JP Designs and they build websites, design posters, portfolios, advertising materials and lots more.
I have worked with them on numerous different projects and they have also helped many other companies we work with including the FX3 Promotion. (see http://www.fx3.org.uk)
Their basic website is upto 5 pages, costs the equivelant of £50.00 per page. Total cost £250.00.
They will also help promote the site on search engines, liase with you and offer regular updates on the site. They also organised the domain name and hosting and everything for us.They were really helpful and ensured we got everything we needed.
The owner is called Yasin and he can be contacted on 07919 364030
Hope this is helpful.

Aye, frontpage as well. If you can use word you can work this one. Drag and drop and preview everything before you let it loose out there 😉 .
All you need then is a domain and hoster, download cute ftp for free and as long as you have all the right fields in the connect manager (no not them) it is drag and drop onto your site.

Plus there’s programs like “flash ad creator” which allows you to create flash banners, and it doesn’t hurt having a girlfriend that works with graphics to pitch in on creating a website. 😀
But it’s certainly a good idea to look at other service engineers websites to help the old grey matter into giving you ideas.David

i used http://www.1and1.co.uk
defo recommend getting a website, you would not believe the amount of people who google “washing machine repair Edinburgh” etc.
i would recommend getting google adwords as well, gets you a sponsered listing depending on what you say and where you are, ive only been running a short time but ive had at least 4-5 calls a day direct from google, hopefully through time this will continue to improve……

KeymasterBe VERY careful using Google Adwords, it’s an art in itself and its very easy to get carried away which equates to it costing too much. You’ll often see ads on here for repairers from all over the UK yet the traffic on here is non-geographic.

I’m in the middle of doing Google adwords now, you don’t have much selection with who sees your ad, for me it uk, wales or my town, i can’t put in the county which would be much better, so i’ve settled on my town and i’ve placed a low monthly spend limit.
