ParticipantHi Folks,
I honestly do have better things to do on a friday evening but the kids are in bed and the wife’s out for a swim, so….
I’ve been looking for justification to get an ipad for work use on the road (yeah right!) and wondered if I could sync my Sage software (a dated version of Instant Accounts) with an ipad whilst on the road to help, for example, save double booking the diary as my wife takes calls at home.
It would also be hugely useful to be able to update people’s jobs there and then without having paperwork to process when I get home. If I took people’s email, I guess I could send them receipts instantly and reduce the paper trail.
Ordering electronically while on the road to avoid missing the dreaded deadline for next day delivery, checking banks, emails, perhaps taking electronic payments are all conceivable benefits. I’m sure most the manufacturers are sending engineers out with ipads but are these things viable for us wee independent’s? I expect a good number of you are streets ahead of me already and have been operating something like this for yonks. Please illuminate me someone.
Thanks, Simon 💡August 30, 2013 at 9:07 pm #400183kwatt

Sage on an iPad, so far as I know is a non-starter I’m afraid.
The other stuff you can do but, it’s either a bit of a kludge or expensive as things are just now.
That said, they do have a use as you can load them up with tech docs and stuff so it can be useful.
No doubt that will get better in time.

I’ve just been in the local EE shop and they’ve got a cracking deal on until close of play on Monday.
SIM cards with 5gb of data for 10.99 a month.
I’m going back in on Monday to get myself a couple.August 31, 2013 at 7:37 pm #400186bagman

Better off with three’s one plan.
Truly unlimited data, 2000 mins 2000 texts.£15 a month, just tether your tablet/laptop to your phone and away you go.

I checked it out and discovered this company are about a mile from my doorstep. I might pop in and get the lowdown straight from the horses mouth.Bagman mentioned simply tethering your phone to your tablet. Somebody said they can be funny about you doing that and using shed loads of data via your mobile. Right or wrong?! I thought I’d have to get a cellular contract with an ipad.

No, if you look at the one plan with three, it clearly states that tethering is allowed on that plan. In fact on some of their other plans, it’s specifically barred.
Some guys have really pushed it in order to find out if there are any limits and they’ve had up to 220Gb in a month with no cap.
There is a throttling policy that may happen during peak hours, but it’s still pretty much unlimited.
