Well drinking glassware of all types can suffer a variety of problems when washed in a dishwasher. Crystal leaded glass (cut glass) should never be washed in this way. Many products even labelled as ‘dishwasher safe’ will in the long term suffer from knocks and scratches, high temperature variants and the harsh effect of bleach based detergent action. Patterned and painted glasses are the first to suffer from dishwasher overuse. 🙁

Ovenware glass such as Pyrex (for example) does not suffer any after effects from constant use in a dishwasher. The hardened crystalline compound used in their construction is virtually impervious to temperature and detergent action. 🙂

Therefore if you are a dishwasher user the ‘rule of thumb’ has to be that normal day to day glasses washed in a dishwasher will come out bright and shiny every time but in the long term will fade, have etch marks and even exhibit multi-coloured rainbow surface markings. So replace your drinking glasses regularly. Glass ovenware/cookware, no problem, except caution of course whilst loading and unloading. 😉

    Thanks, that’s useful.

One supplement: can “regular” glass – as used in shelving – be put in the dishwasher? It fits without obstructing any moving parts.

    Thanks!

Fridge glass shelves I guess? Why bother putting in a dishwasher? Leave them where they are and wipe with a damp cloth instead. 😉

No, it’s actually the shelf above the bathroom sink. It has a sort of frosted finish, and even scrubbing with Cif doesn’t get rid of some stains. That’s why I was wondering about the dishwasher, but that mightn’t work either!

No! Don’t put that in the dishwasher! Leave it in situ and clean it instead by soaking the “stains” in vinegar or lemon juice, then wipe with a damp cloth. Or call in Kim & Aggie? 😆
