Work slow here too and it doesn’t help with local store Homemaker selling Beko 1000’s for Β£129.99. My engineer says he wants a pay increase and I reckon he’s earning more than me now. How much should you pay a good engineer when it’s difficult to find a replacement but work is getting harder to find?

I was in the same position a few years ago and I employed my wife full time too.
I lost my biggest customer and had to bite the bullet and let my engineer go.
My wife went out and got a job and can earn as much as I do when things go quiet.
To cut a long story short I am much better off financially even though my turnover has dropped by 75{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} π πHolidays are easier too as I just shut up shop and take the mobile and diary with me 8)

ParticipantIts all gone quiet
Has anyone noticed that all of a sudden there seems to be a dramatic downturn in contract work coming in,or is it just me?
As most of the work I am talking about is either warranty or insurance work,I dont understand why this is happening. The state of the economy should not have that much of an impact on this type of work as most of this work, would be carried out at no extra expense to the customers in question.
I would be interested to hear of any comments anybody may have.July 5, 2010 at 8:44 pm #414194blackandwhites

ParticipantIs it quiet or what??
Iv’e been sat on my back side for about the last 3 weeks praying for the phone to ring. As luck has it for me I do quite a lot of work for estate agents and 3 manufactures so I have managed to turn to that which is ok but the 30 day payment term isnt very nice.
Is it just me or is anybody else feeling the pinch?
Is it Area related perhaps? Im in Dewsbury West Yorkshire which is a very highly populated area with low, middle and upper class citizens..
It’s feeling very slow, might have to see if the local supermarket need some help stacking their stocks soon if things dont pick up..September 13, 2010 at 4:41 pm #414197Martin

I can only sympathise at your situation and refer you direct to our MAIN THREAD ON THE SAME SUBJECT we’ve been running all year!8)
The good news is though that the little sh*ts are back at school, everyone is back from their hols in Ayia Napa so work should pick up pretty quickly from now on in. But best keep us posted HERE anyway on how things are going your way! π

I’m a sole trader, my reputation round here is good after 24 years experience in the industry, but not had much work since Easter period and to be honest a couple of weeks running up to that was quiet too. Business seems to be coming through in dribs and drabs but it’s been dire for too long to the point where im thinking about doing something else for a living as this trade isn’t providing one. Anybody else feeling the pinch? And if so, what do you think the reasons behind it are?
