Following on from my earlier thread about my Hoover fridge freezer frezing everything in the fridge compartment, I have decided to get someone in to sort it out.

Hoover are offering a fixed price repair for £119.95, and I reckon it needs either a temperature sensor or a PCB. I’m not looking for a quote, but can anyone offer an opinion on whether that represents good value compared to a local independent?

    Thanks…

    Hi Quidam,

The short answer is, it might be.

The answer that’s longer and more interesting is, depends on what’s wrong with it and also who actually offered the fixed cost along with the conditions of the offer.

To put it in perspective, the “average” UK repair cost from an independent repairer is £65-75.

It’s probably the PCB that’s fragged, a weak point with Candy for some time as they lose the plot and just continually cool. That said, I’ve seen the odd thermistor and fan motor failure as well but by far and away the PCB duff is the most common issue.

PCB, there’s multiple choice depending on the serial number from what I can see that we’ve used. I can’t get access to the GIAS service system from here. But the PCBs are £50-60 a pop.

If you can give me a serial number I can drill it down further for you as to exactly what one is used and whether there’s any other common issues I’m aware of with those units.

So, £120 to replace the PCB, not too bad in all honesty.

But do check that the fan motor is running.

    K.
