ParticipantHello all, looking for some advice before ordering a new oven, i am wondering if what i have is suitable to use with a 16amp new oven….seen a few remarks that if you have a “big red switch” then it should be fine, that red switch doesnt appear to have a fuse but runs the cooker and extractor hood.
As for the fuse board, the left most red fuse i believe is the cooker fuse and says 30 on it.
There is no writing on the cable/flex to the actual cooker, but it’s pretty thick and chunky,https://photos.app.goo.gl/mtoNDBgW9EETLH6N9
The top of the spurs with the fuse is wired from the bottom one, it has a 5amp fuse and is for the piezo on the gas hob.
Hope the link works to the album!! not very good at linking pics and the like,
any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rich.

Moderatorif the extractor hood is running off a 30A fuse its a big no no. needs to be down rated top 3A before it fails
you electric system is well dated and probably needs updating
you can update the box by adding retro fit MCB’s. you can get them used off Ebay for not much money but you cant fit the top cover once they are fitted
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181755332…EAAOSwDNdVjoeXI prefer the switch ones not the push button type. there are other advertisers but this will improve safety as they trip sooner
as for the oven on the cooker circuit it should be fine and a lot safer if you uprate to breakers

ParticipantThanks for the reply!
As far as I know it’s all the original wiring from when the house was built around 1985.?will have to get the extractor checked then, when I switch that big red rocker switch it turns the hood off..
as for retro fitting the breakers, those that you linked to will fit, are they a universal fitting? And presume the numbers on the front are the amp rating?
The top cover could be cut to fit the new breakers couldn’t it?Thanks, Rich.

Moderatorsometimes they put a socket or spur box behind the hood chimney
if yes make sure fuse is 3Athose breakers are desined to replace the wylex rewirable or cartridge fuse carriers. you can still get them new but as old boards get replaced there are thousands of perfectly good secon hand ones. the new ones come complete with the plastic guard as well
you can cut top out of cover to fit breakers Yes

ParticipantAh ok I’ll take the filter out the extractor hood later and have a look!
do I need to keep the fuses the same amps as what’s there already, the one that’s there for the cooker is currently a 30amp, see posts from others saying that the fuse should be swapped for a 16 amp one? My current cooker is a 13amp cooker?
thanks for the help!! Much appreciated :0)

Moderatoryou dont get a 16a fuse the closest is 20. you can get a 20 amp breaker to replace in fuse board as long as you dont intend to install an electric hob at any time
