I have just been reading a thread in the general trade forum by someone called Lesandclare and with the best will in the world it is quite obvious that a ten year old would have more knowledge of domestic appliance repair, than this guy.

What worries me is that I along with others within UKW are phoning people up trying to convince them to join a community of fellow skilled and experienced proffessionals. It does us little good when they then view a thread within the trade section where a guy is asking if Bosch is a good make and where he seeks advice from the likes of the Andy Art Trigg website if his problem is any more difficult than a chaffed wire or a belt that has fallen off

I know I’m about to be shot down in flameS but I honestly think that trade access should be withdrawn from someone who has such little grasp or knowledge of our trade.

We need to be a little more discerning about who we grant trade access to in the first place as we will begin to loose credibility if we are to let the world and its dog into the trade forums just because they know how to fit a 13 amp plug.

He delivers and installs washing machines in the West End Sean.

No-one ever said that the trade forums are restricted to engineers or from the service side 😉

Anyone with White Goods involvement will be given access if they can prove so. Otherwise we wouldn’t have the likes of Curry’s/Comet sales staff etc in there 🙂

10 minutes after that reply, I get this:

    Sender’s Name: Allsorts
    Sender’s Email: enquiries@secondhandheaven.co.uk
Message: Please allow us access to the Trade Only areas…

    Our details are as follows:

    Allsorts (George Laugharne)
    82 Chester Road West
    Deeside
    Clwyd CH5 1BZ
    01244 811888
    07787 182156

Yell listing is “Secondhand Furniture” which means he sells anything he can get his hands on and wants to “learn” how to repair the crap appliances he picks up from reading the trade forums, personally these guys should not be given access

    ??

Dave still has a point though Sean, where do you draw the line on who is or is not trade? Do they need a qualification to gain access? Do they need to even be technical? Or is it simply invovement in the industry?

Taking your stance most of the work providers and insurers would have access denied or withdrawn.

The second reply was mine 😉

    What about “Allsorts” ?

I don’t think he should be given access, I checked again today and he’s an ebayer selling loads of crap as well as a few appliance spares 😕
