ParticipantHi,
My ISE CI 555 WH machine sounds like it needs new bearings. We have already had the bearings replaced once, in the last year of its warrenty, about 18 months ago. We bought the machine in 09/2006. I have no previous experience of washing machine repair but am very practicle and would like to replace the bearings myself. I have however read the bearing replacement info sheet on the whitegoods site which suggests this isnt a good job to start with! Since ISE is marketed as being designed with ease/low cost maintenance in mind I am hoping that this machine may be one of the easier designs to work on? Any comments on this would be appreciated. Also if there are any special tools I will require. If I go ahead with the job I will replace the tub seal too as recommended by the article.October 31, 2012 at 11:25 pm #384035iadom

It is not a simple DIY job however, unlike a lot of the modern machines with totally sealed drums the bearings can be replaced but it is not a walk in the park.
That said apart from one or two makes of machines of much earlier vintage most bearing changes that can be undertaken these days are not for the faint hearted or the untrained. 😉
No special tools as such but there are a lot of torxs screws to remove to split the drum, it is a fairly heavy drum assembly so be prepared for some heavy lifting.

I’d look at also replacing the shaft. 18months is not a long life for bearings in this machine. Tub assy has to be removed and as above is heavy. Time consuming but no different to any other tub out bearing change.

Hi Both, thanks very much for your comments. I think I will give it a go and see how I get on. 🙂

With any bearing change on an older machine I would always advise trying to strip it down first before you order any parts.
The drum support shaft mentioned above is not available from ISE, only a complete inner drum AFAIK.
I do believe that a drum support without the inner drum can be obtained from other sources.
A good idea would be to strip it down and if possible post up some pics of the drum shaft for us to have a look at. 😉

Hi Iadom.
I have almost completely stripped the machine and think I have found the problem! A piece of wire was wrapped around the heating element and obviously scraping on the outer surface of the metal washing drum. So not the bearings after all. I have attached a photo of the wire. Could this have come from inside the machine or is it likely to have made its way through the mesh from some washing? The diameter is small enough to have got through the grill.
However, I havent managed to get into the bearings and shaft yet. Should I be able to unscrew the bolt from the back of the drum? I have laid it on the drum opening with the bolt head facing unwards and my weight on the drive wheel but still can’t get it undone. I have sprayed it with WD40 and will try again, perhaps with a piece of pipe over my rachet handle! but just wanted to make sure Im not missing something. It wouldn’t be a left hand thread would it?
Many thanks again,

That there be a bra wire! Often found hiding in washing machines up and down the country, and very rarely missed

That really is a BRA WIRE

Just put it all back together, if it spins freely and is quiet then leave the bearings well alone. Normal thread on the securing nut but it is loctited in.

all that work for that!
So am I just being weak with the bolt at the back? Perhaps I should not mess with it now save having to replace the bearing sealNovember 12, 2012 at 10:15 pm #384044Kaz15

Put the machine back together and give it a test, checking for leaks etc, i think you have fixed it!

I take it you haven’t got a bra missing the underwire?

TBH, if you have opened the drum up into to halves then I would strongly advise fitting a new drum seal, it will almost certainly leak if you do not do so.
You cannot replace the bearing seal without removing the inner drum, don’t disturb it for now.

Not that I’ve noticed Dr Drill, as you say rarely missed!
Iadom, I put the new drum seal in just in case and left the rest alone as you suggested. I have done 4 loads now with no issues so it seems to be ok. 😀
Thank you all very much for your advice.
