Funnily enough Martin, you’ve hit on something that I’ve been looking at, albeit from a slightly different angle.
In essence though, the Mail is for a change quite correct in many regards and the problem of social spamming is very real. I seem to recall just the other day someone here saying that some “customer” left a bad review that caused issue. Not Checkatrade though, I think it was Yell if memory serves me.
There’s been a ton of research done in the US especially about it over the past few years largely due to completely false or unjustified remarks left on Tripadvisor and Yelp, they get slammed as they largely rely on these reviews for their business model.
It is not at all unusual for friend and family to give reviews to boost reputation.
It is also not unusual for competitors and aggrieved customers to post very damning reviews.
And, then there’s paid for services as well where you can pay a company to boost you on social media or, berate the competition.
It led me to writing this piece about it: http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buyi … views.html
It is a topic that may be discussed in September’s meeting.

Then perhaps their slogan should read : “Checkatrade – where reputation matters but bad reviews of our clients are never published”

You see it even in our trade Martin, magically some companies only get good reviews.
You can even find some replicated across multiple sites which would indicate that they are false. You can even find some from people in far flung areas from the company displaying them, unless they were doing repairs while on holiday, these are false.
Checkatrade and others business model revolves around good customer reviews, I very much doubt that they will kick people paying them off unless the body of evidence is too strong to ignore. Equally publishing negative reviews lessens the value of paying for the service to the businesses that advertise there as the work they get will diminish.
It is little wonder that it is the way it is.
So long as people are daft enough to believe it and use these services though and there’s a willing band of subscribers for it, they will exist.
The danger for companies is that false reviews, from what I can tell, are being viewed in law as false advertising and that can carry a heavy penalty. It is an area that appears to be coming under increasing pressure and regulation being enforced.
So if you’ve got any dodgy reviews, I’d get shot just in case TS knock on your door one day. It could even be a competitor that grasses you in for it never mind a member of the public.

yeh unless you have an army of online writers like 0800 had at one point , its not worth the hassle encouraging customers to review you .
i dont care who it is there will always be some moaning git not happy about something – normally a retired teacher etc with nothing better to do than sit a his computer and tell the world about his boring retired life.
something like yes after the repair man left i found a washer on the floor .when i was still working i would take into the lab and analyse it to see if it was the same metal as the rest of the appliance.
now im retired i think i will waste someones time whatever can i do ?
1 call the engineer back – but he might call me a ..££$$$$$$$ for wasting his time over such a trivial matter , on the other hand he may be fully understanding and recheck his work ..
cant take the chance of a confrontation – mmmm what am i good at ..oh yes i was a teacher i can write something online ..
I FEEL EPIC ….
lol
this is not a true story and no customer has been hurt .. ?
