ParticipantHelp. My Frost free freezer has stopped freezing. These are the symptoms. The compressor is very hot. There were frozen droplets of water on the upper side of the inside of the cabinet. There doesn’t appear to be any fan working. The temperature indicator hovered around 17 and 16 for a couple of days (normally 18 ) before being unable to freeze today. Looking through the top vent in the cabinet at the fins, there were a few small frozen water droplets.
Model No JLFZW1806,similar to AEG
I live out in the sticks. Is there anything I can try prior to getting a service engineer, which will take about 4 days? I have checked all obvious things.January 18, 2008 at 12:01 pm #240110kwatt
KeymasterHi Potty,
I don’t think there’s much you will be able to do from the description of the fault I’m afraid. Some of these machines are really quite complex in execution even if they do seem simple on the surface.
TBH it does sound like a compressor failure or possibly a thermistor problem, but I am unfamiliar with the specific machine.

Ok, I’ve left the freezer off with the door open for a couple of hours, and then switched it back on. The compressor pipe gets a bit colder; the cooler unit at the top appears to be getting cold ,but no still fan to distribute the air. Is there any way the fan can be easily accessed? Does the fan ever seize up with ice? What sensors control the fan? So many questions, so little time to save the food…

Finally got it repaired. Diagnosed as fan not operating. After being told by various people that the fans were very reliable, the repairman changed boards and sensors as he didn’t carry the fans as they were so reliable…..needless to say it was the fan….

ParticipantJust a note on early JL models… there is a modified fan switch push button (prt no. 2426450033) that is located in the front of the top inside the freezer section (like the Zanussi curved fronted FF models). Sorry I haven’t got the relevant model number.
If you have an early John Lewis model that is erratic, tape the freezer door switch in and if that fixes the erraticness (made up word) then the modified part may fix the problem.
I have fitted lots of these to get the fan spinning but have yet to fit a fan motor.

Thanks. I will bear this in mind, should there be further problems.

Also of note would be to put some mastic at rear of freezer section where evap pipe work and probe wiring goes in.
