ParticipantHi, I have a 4+ year old washing machine that over the weekend has decided to stop rotating. It fills with water ok, and drains ok, but when it reaches the spin phase of a wash, or even if it’s just put on to a spin cycle, it doesn’t even attempt to rotate (drum remains motionless). Took the back off and the belt looks fine and the drum rotates by hand ok.

your post is a bit confusing
let say you select a wash. it fills and does not turn ?
the way you describe it sounds like its ok on the wash but has trouble spinning
anyway most likely fault is the motor carbon brushes. they wear with age so is a common fault

Hi Dave, thanks for the prompt reply.
To make it a bit clearer – the drum never rotates – not even during the wash cycle.
If it is the motor carbon brushes – is this a customer or engineer replacable part?

at the rear of the motor you will find 2 brush holders (see picture)
as a quick test. unplug machine and tilt it back so you can see underneath. tap each brushholder firmly with a screwdriver. put the machine down plug in and try it
if it works you know you need to change the brushes
if it does not you may well still need new brushes but you will have to remave them to checkDave

Hi Dave, a quick few taps where you indicated and the drum is rotating again now. Many thanks.
I’m guessing this has just given me a bit of breathing space, that will be short lived, and I need to fix it properly?
Where do I order these motor carbon brushes from?
I’m assuming it’s customer replacable?

its very likely your are identical to the picture. brushes are held on by small screws with a hexagon top. if you have any mechanical skill its not difficult
very likely your brushes are
https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/car99-c … on-brushesbut to be certain you will have to remove one to compare against the picture. be careful not to drop the screws in the motor and if you do make sure you find it
you could email the site shop and send them a picture of the motor rear if you want to be certain
