John Lewis JLWM1201 Washer – Help Please

We have the above washer, which is about 4 years old. It had a problem in its first year under guarantee. The repair man said, “I’ll be seeing you again, these are made by Zanussi (or was it Electrolux?)” The wife’s mother also had one replaced after 18 months due to a PCB fault making it uneconomic to repair, so I’m not too impressed with the brand.

Anyway, ours has failed again. It is just completely dead – no display, no LED’s, zilch, zip, nada.

I’ve tried all the obvious external stuff like supply and fuse before I strip it down, but two questions spring to mind…….

1. Is/are there any internal fuses on the PCB or elsewhere that I might get lucky by changing?

2. Is it likely that this is just going to be another expensive PCB fault that I won’t be able to diagnose myself?

I could go through the motions with a multimeter, could even put a scope on it if I knew what to measure and where. I’m not beyond rebuilding a PCB (I did just that on my Whirlpool American fridge). But frankly if I can’t sort it myself I’m loathe to waste a call-out fee if I’m going to be shelling out for another washer anyway.

Follow this path…

Mains plug > Cable > Mains Filter > On/Off Switch..

To that point it’s trackable pretty much, after it, you’re into the electronics and there won’t be a fuse in there.

Okay, many thanks for that. There’s no on/off switch, unless it’s built into the selector dial, but I’ll trace the path anyway.

What’s the mains filter on this model? Is it just a fat caapcitor or something a bit more sophisticated?

Looks like a capacitor, should be where the mains cable comes in.

BTW, it is an Electrolux in a dress, all the JL machines are.

Strange! I got out the electrical toolkit then mouthed a few obscenities in preparation for the trial before me. Just to be on the safe side before I unplugged, I had one last go to get it working.

It worked. It’s currently washing the dog’s towels and we’ll see what happens next.

I’m convinced that there are some PCB related gremlins awaiting, but they won’t emerge again until after the discounted offer I found on a top of the range Bosch replacement has expired.
