Just curious: what’s that convoluted side panel for

Now that my broken dishwasher is working again (thanks aquaelectric) I’ve got to wondering.

The whole side of my Zanussi is taken up with a plastic side panel with a convoluted way of delivering water to the machine. It looks like a childs pinball machine with the water entering at the top and working it’s way down through a series of channels to the bottom and into the machine (it seems).

During the wash this panel doesn’t seem to be utilised.

What’s the point? Why can’t they just fill the machine more straightforwardly?
