Participanta fella popped into my shop almost two weeks ago now in a hurry he dropped an integrated fridge with us to repair for him but would not leave any contact details then fled that afternoon he rang to see how we were getting on with it again he did not know his hone number and no we did not do 1471 not suspecting anything the fridge was degassed stabbed we told him it was no good he said he knows someone who will repair it and would be round shortly to pick it up. now we still have this thing cluttering up my workshop with no way to contact its owner and it will cost us to dispose of it so what do i do can i dispose how long do i have to keep it if i chuck it and he comes back for it where do i stand does anyone know
or has this fellah just “dumped” his rubbish on me 😛August 28, 2007 at 3:54 pm #225861Martin

That puts a new slant on fly-tipping it really does. 🙁
At best you can charge him a ‘handling charge and weekly storage charge’ (i.e £25 handling charge then £3.00 per week storage charge or whatever rate you feel appropriate?) But my guess is the guy has done a runner?
Unfortunately as you haven’t taken his name or address and neither do you have his phone number. You cannot cite that you have taken appropriate steps to contact your customer and therefore would be liable to supply him with a replacement fridge should you dump his old one and he comes back for it. Therefore your only option is to hold on to the appliance for at least 6 MONTHS before it would be recognised as reasonable for you to dispose of it at your own expense. 😥

Perhaps you need to update your phone and get caller display. I find this invaluable when customers forget to leave their phone number or indeed just forget it altogether.

ok until they withold their number, we will not take anything in unless we have full contact details which avoids such situations, no matter what kind of hurry they are in and we also take an inspection fee which is fully refundable if the repair goes ahead.

us too! we also find customers in such a hurry and until the customer drops off the inspection charge the product will not get looked at.

all taken on board lads, perhaps caller id is a good idea as we get a lot of old dodderys forget their number and 1471 may as well be on speed dial
as for the drop off we just dont get many people drop them off here we normally call out happens maybe once or twice a month i think i will take the fridge home and put it in my garage less likely to get damaged thenSeptember 22, 2007 at 7:44 am #225866VillageIdiot2

This has just happened to me also 🙁
Guy came in with TNT van with fridge on the back. Unloaded it and dropped it in. One of the girls took all the customers details, booked it in and stuck the job card on the fridge.
Workshop Engineer diagnosed compressor gone, tried to ring cust to give quote…. wrong tel number, did 118118, no person with that name at that address….. Got another Engineer to call at the address given…. False 🙁
Where do I stand now with regards to the keeping or scrapping of this fridge? Any help would be most appreciated 🙂

Ive had a few near misses when you think its safe to dump an appliance. Hey presto up comes the customer, they can sense when its gone. Even when youve chased them to collect working or not.
Ive never had to cough up with a new appliance but had a couple of close scrapes, when Ive got carried away with clearing out. 😳September 23, 2007 at 7:55 pm #225868Martin

Then she should have charged the customer a flat rate (of say?)’£30 handling & inspection charge’ up front before handing a copy of the job card to the customer and bidding them good day! 😉

KeymasterI’d have to agree with Martin, take a deposit or don’t take the appliance would be my opinion as then the wasters will go elsewhere.

We do however always charge a £10 +vat inspection fee whatever the product large or small…this is of course deducted from any final repair bill but it does weed out those who don’t really want to spend any money in the first place 😉

charge a storage fee if he ever turns up again and if you still have it in 6 months its yours by law.
