Kelvinator / Fisher & Paykel – Smart Drive 051

We’ve got a problem with the above washing machine, it fails to fill, starts beeping and the hot & cold wash temp LEDs flash along with the last of the wash progress LEDs.

Is that enough info to diagnose, or can some one post me info on how to enter the diagnostic mode so I can post LED codes pack here for interpretation?

Turn machine OFF on the front panel. Hold down the Water Temp Down button and press the POWER button. Release buttons. You are in Diagnostic mode. Press advance once, then press the spin speed up button until the hold and slow are lit. Write down the LEDS which are lit across the top row of progress LEDS. 😉

Thanks for the quick reply. The LEDs read as follows:

0 0 1 0 0 1 0 1

Where 0 = Off and 1 = On 🙄

I’m hoping it’s an easy fix…

That code is that the machine does not detect a drop in water level within the allowed time. Doesn’t really tie in with what you’ve described so far. Anyway, you should check that the pump is in circuit, has continuity through it, and is not blocked. Failing that, the harness back to the computer needs to be checked. Last resort is the computer board itself.

Turn off power at wall. Remove the inspection hatch on the front rh cnr ( if the W/M has one, if not, just tilt the W/M back ), shine a torch in and give the small propellor on the bottom of the drain pump a couple of turns, if it at first feels tight, keep turning until it feels free, then advance to spin and start.

If this doesn’t work, undo the 2 screws at the front of the top( under the little covers) tilt the top back being careful with the inlet hoses, having previously removed the agitator. Then unclip the plastic ring around the top and hang it to the side or disconnect spring( remember to refit spring ) from suspension. Then in one swift upward movement (not too swift) remove the inner bowl, and then you will see the pump cover. Remove the screw clamping it down and remove cap and base, now get your hand in and feel around the impellor on the top of the pump , and remove any foreign matter. Try propellor on bottom of pump to check if it is free before reassembling.

Read instructions backwards to refit

If the fault continues then the motor controller is probably faulty.

Sorry for the delay getting back to the group with my progress on this – I became a Dad a few days after Kiwis reply so that’s been taking up a fair bit of time.
Anyway, Penguin was pretty much on the mark, the water level wasn’t changing, but I believe it was because it wasn’t -filling- fast enough, swapping the hoses from cold to hot and switching to a hot wash (or using an alternate water source) avoided the beeps.
I checked the pump as per Kiwis instructoins and that was running freely so, armed with that knowledge I was able to enlist the help of the local repair guy who has replaced the cold valve on the machine and we’re up and running, all ready for that tower of washing which will begin when wife and junior return from hospital.

Thanks to the group – this has been a great resource and a good find which will stay in my bookmarks.

501 machines will keep the last fault code untill a new code is stored you must have had a problem at sometime with the pump It was fixed but the fault code remains until a new fault ocurrs.
