ParticipantHi,
We have had this fridge freezer for a few years and had a mod to assist with the defrost problem.
It has allways been noisy, as the fan is circulating the cool air. It does seem to be somewhat more noisier than a previous Hotpoint and sounds laboured; should I explore a possible fan change under the warranty or should I except this noise?
I do not expect silence as in a standard fridge freezer and thought there was an isssue with the noise on these; any help appreciated!

Hi Gerard,
I’d suggest you have a read of this article first before you pursue it any further.
I’d also say that, especially if the old one wasn’t frost free or air driven then it would be a lot quieter. Frost free machines are, as a general rule, noisier as there’s moving parts and they run longer.

ParticipantGerard , has it always been excessively noisy ? If you look at the label on the left hand side wall , you will see a section with an FD number i.e FD 8606
If its between 8605 and 8611 , then it may have an inherent noisy fan.
Even if its over 2 yrs old , it may be worth contacting BSH to explain your problem. We may be quite sympathetic to your situation if you’ve had previous problems.October 7, 2008 at 8:41 pm #264488Gerard

Thanks guys.
It has allways been noisy, more so than the Hotpoint FF?92/72 which it replaced. I have always had to close the door to the kitchen as it is irritating but since we are having building work and have it in the lounge it is very noisy.
I am donating it to my folks but they have a standard FF and may not appreciate all the noise and wondered if a fan change (under the extended warranty) may sort it out.best wishes.

ParticipantYes , it would . Some of the inital fans that were fitted had a lack of ‘padding’ on the rear of the fan body causing a vibration against the rear wall…hence the appliance sounding like a motorboat.
The other probs that could cause a noisy fan is a repeat of the ice build up at the rear of the evaporator or the pipes of the evaporator being too close to the fan.October 8, 2008 at 8:24 pm #264490Gerard

Thanks nomad, it has had the defrost mod; would they have done the fan change at the same time?

Participantit would all depend on the engineer really. Some would change as a matter of course…some would only do it if they deemed it to be noisy.
Even when the fan is running on these models , it’s hardly discernible and shouldn’t cause you to have to close your kitchen door .
Did the engineer who modded the appliance leave you a job sheet ? It should show all the parts that were replaced on the mod call-out . -
