ParticipantWent to a customer yesterday to fix his Bosch washer. Alongside it was a Bush dishwasher and when I questioned his choice of brand he elaborated his reasoning……
He bought it from Argos and took out 3 yr extended warranty. It has failed twice and each time been replaced in the last 2 yrs. And, by his reckoning, it costs him just £50 per annum to have a fully functional d/w without need to buy new or pay for repairs. And when the insurance co then call BER they then offer a settlement fee and he buys a Chinese replacement again from Argos.
:hmm: I need to figure that one out right now as the detail needs confirmation. But his ‘logic’ prompted my post…..What do you guys reckon? Is his logic flawed? If so then how or why?

I think his reasoning is sound. I bought a Bosch D/W with the two year warranty. Included with the doc’s I could extend parts and labour to 5 years (extra 3 really)for £ 85 quid.
For the extra 3 that worked out at just under £29 per year so thats fit eh did. Eight years on and apart from the pcb recall nay problems, but then I dooooooooo loooook after my appliances.

I’ve only ever worked it out for an Asko built one as it’s the only one I’ve got reliable figures for…
Current D243 is £899 with a ten year warranty.
Maximum exposure, £89 a year.
Projected “normal” lifespan is about 25 years if it’s not abused etc. but they have been known to go much longer than that with no faults.
So, less than £40 a year without any fighting insurance companies, days off work or poor results.

I’ve taken time out to check my customers theory out on Bush dishwashers and Argos’ extended warranty. And in essence his plan doesn’t stack up……
A basic Bush dishwasher from Argos costs right now : £219.95
With a 3 year extended warranty option (product value only up to £199.99) an additional £54.99Total purchase price (excluding delivery) = £274.94 (equates to £91.65 per annum based on 3 year life). If the product breaks down within that 3 year period it would be repaired or replaced free of charge. (subject to availability up to a value of £199.99) If the product is replaced then the plan will cease and further insurance only available via a third party insurer*. However the policy only runs up to the value of £199.99 and Argos don’t have such a product available from stock at that price set. Therefore they will only issue ‘store vouchers’ to the value of. Leaving their customer with little choice but to put that toward another suitable replacement and pay the extra premium for the privilege.
*Having checked around there’s no insurance company out there that would take on a Bush branded dishwasher anyway. So effectively the whole deal ends at that point.
