ParticipantHello folks
Last night I opened our 7 year old LEC TF55142W fridge freezer and noticed the light didn’t come on, and then we noticed it was completely silent.
We couldn’t actually recall if complete silence was a common part of the fridge noise cycle!I checked the fuse in the plug it seemed fine, but I replaced it anyway. Made no difference.
I checked the wall socket it was plugged into with a lamp and it was working fine.
We were discussing what to try next when suddenly the familiar fridge noise started. Good! This was about 1.30am last night, so we then went to bed. This morning when we woke up and checked the fridge was completely silent again.
I found a replacement bulb and fitted it and it illuminated. But still no noise. We unplugged it for a bit, then plugged it back in after about 15 minutes. Still silent.
Then around 20 minutes later we noticed it was making it’s usual sound again. What could be going on?
Things still seem appropriately cold in the fridge and nothing has defrosted in the freezer.I’ve found myself looking up compatible thermostat replacements, but I don’t know if a faulty thermostat would create exactly this behaviour.
Basically is it normal that for part of a fridge-freezer’s cycle it should be COMPLETELY silent?
I can’t recall for definite, but I’m sure it always made some kind of noise. But I just can’t be sure!
What do you think? If periods of complete silence is NOT normal for an appliance like this, what fault could cause this behaviour? Is it something I can fix myself?
Any help with this would be VERY appreciated!
Thank you.

ParticipantYes, it is perfectly normal for it to be silent at times as the thermostat will be switching the compressor on periodically to cool it and off again when it is at the right temperature. When the compressor is off it will be silent.
Sounds like the only issue was a blown bulb which you have now fixed.September 18, 2022 at 12:14 pm #483687jamieboo
ParticipantThanks so much tubafan!
It’s so weird, I always thought there was some noise, even when the compressor was off.
I thought the fans kept going to keep everything circulating nicely, or something.
Its utter silence when the compressor is off is suddenly a bit unsettling!
But if you say this is normal then that helps to put my mind at rest a bit.Thank you!
