ParticipantTurned the washing machine on today and it tripped the electrics after the first couple of setup check lights came on on pressing the on/off button. It didn’t run through the normal check cycle completely.
I checked it in a different socket, but still trips.
I checked the filter and there was a lot of black limescale (wasn’t there last time I checked 6 months ago).
I’ve unplugged the door latch, but it looked OK and still trips with it disconnected.
Is next step the pumps. There’s no obvious water ingress, or chafed wires.
Many thanks for suggestions/help.

first thing to try is the heater. disconnect the wires and see if it trips then

Yep, doesn’t trip now! Can the heater be replaced easily?

yes no probs did one yesterday
undo centre bolt tap centre in and carefully withdraw heater. it may take a but of gentle prising to get it out
when you insert the new one make sure it fits in the bracket inside the tub ( look in the hole it came out of you will see it )
push new one in be careful not to over tighten

Brilliant thanks. I’ll get one on order and fit it. I guess I better check the thermostat too, just in case that’s linked to the failure of the element. Or do they tend to fail independently?

it would have to very old to have a machanical stat all current models use an electronic sensor known as a thermistor. if you look at the heater its the small plug between the main terrminals an normally supplied with the heater
try the site shop for your spare as the profit helps to fund this resource

The new one is different in that it has a thermistor between whereas the old one doesn’t. In ther old one it looks like the thermistor is separate to the left hand side, with a different connection. I’m presuming that I can connect it, without the thermistor, and it should be OK (so long as the old thermistor is functioning properly.
Interestingly the old one was caked in limesca!e and gunk!

Yes, all OK. And switched on without tripping. Doubled checked the thermistor and that was working too.
Many thanks for your help Dave
