Hi all. Up until now my LG F1403RD has been faultless but since last week it is completely dead (no lights or noises on pressing start, or any other buttons), possibly connected with overnight electrical storms. I have searched online and think I’m on track but need some qualified help. Story so far:
    1) I have downloaded the relevant Service Manual (from http://www.manualslib.com) the faultfinding guide of which points to replacing the “PWB ASSEMBLY (MAIN)” – located in the base of the machine.
    2) However, my feeling is that it is the “PWB ASSEMBLY (Power)” (SKU: EBR37542901) – located at the top front right (facing it) of the machine which is faulty, because –
    3) – there is power-in to this board but nothing coming out on the 4 pin pink connector to the front panel board; and –
    4) – the two blade pink connector next to the fuse (which is good) has zero resistance between blades – so I presume it is shorted. But there are no apparent signs of anything blown on the board.
I’m not a sparky but I can use a meter and (like to think) there’s not much I can’t fix. Just need to be sure I’m on the right track before ordering the part. Thanks for reading. Paul.
P.S. Prior to above the machine completed a cycle perfectly the previous day. It was just dead next morning.

Re: LG Washer/Dryer LG F1403RD – completely dead – update

So it looks like I was on the slightly wrong track in as much as it does seem to be the Main board rather than the Power board which is at fault. I found that the latter is supplying power to the former when I press the start button, even though there are no lights or noises when pressed, but the LED on the main board does not light up.

On removing this Main pcb I found one blown component – labelled TOP248YN – situated on a black heat-sink next to the tall black component (capacitor?). Anyway, searching on line this seems to be an AC/DC flyback converter and is available for a few pounds.

So the question now is – should I just change this component (after digging the board out of the gel sealant of course) or is it likely that other board components have also blown (or even other washer/dryer parts) and I need to replace the board at 90 odd quid? – or even abandon ship if other parts are likely to be gone.

All and any input will be more than welcome. Paul.

    Hello Paul

I have exactly the same problem with ours , and again it happened around the same night pretty much, same thing I opened it, but can’t see much wrong with the board, I was wondering if you managed to find out any suggestion or managed to fix it. or just best to call someone out to look at it?

    Thanks

Re: LG Washer/Dryer LG F1403RD – completely dead

    Hi Miran
FWIW – I managed to get the above described component (TOP248YN) out by cutting a window in the plastic case, digging out the rubbery gel and de-soldering the 6 legs of the component plus the peg of the heat sink to which it was screwed whilst carefully easing it off the board. I then I fitted a replacement bought off eBay for £1.99 plus postage, connected the board up to the supply from the power board, pressed the start button and – hey presto – LED lights up and start tune plays! I have yet to reconnect everything and see if everything functions but I am cautiously optimistic. If it works I’ve saved the 90 odd quid it would have cost me for a new main board. So if you think you may have the same fault get the main board out and examine very closely the component described above. Mine had obviously overheated and the front part had just cracked off and was laying in the (inverted) plastic cover. Will report back soon. Paul.

Success! Just on its second load and seems to work perfectly!
I went through the test sequence described in the service manual and everything seemed to work as it should so well-pleased that I managed to save a perfectly good machine from the scrap heap using just a £1.99 component and a bit of digging.
Thanks to all those that offered wisdom.
    Paul.

    Follow-up
I know it’s been a while but, just for completeness – after the third load the machine died again, same as before. I’m pretty sure that the TOP248YN ac/dc converter switch thingy has failed again as a result of the associated capacitor being faulty. So I plan to change this and the converter again when I can get around to it.

Final follow-up: Just come across this and realised I hadn’t quite finished – so to complete the story:
The machine sat in the garage for over 4 years as someone had given me another machine (cheap horrible Hotpoint). When that one gave up the ghost (shot bearing) I got around to pulling out LG one and changing the little black component plus the associated capacitor for about £20 off eBay. And ‘eh voila’ the machine has worked perfectly to this day!
In fact it’s as good as new even though it has quite a hard life and is now over 13 years old! So, after recently sorting out a minor leak by re-seating and tightening the drum drain screw clip, I’m about to change the main door seal (£28 eBay) which has become slightly blackened (by neglecting to clean and dry it regularly). And then I expect it to be perfect for years to come! Magic!
