ParticipantOK, OK, I know what some of you guys are going to say, but this has been a reliable machine to date (nearly 5 years old now) and if it’s worth fixing it’ll get done.
Machine is flagging an LE (Overload in motor) error. It is intermittently not turning in one direction (the motor can be seen to “try” to turn around but something is stopping it — sensor reading?), only after it has been on for about 15 minutes or so (it works OK from cold).
The machine is also making a slight grinding noise.
My non-technical thought is a bearing possibly, but has anyone come across this fault on these? Is it likely to be an expensive fix? How easy are these things to work on?
Thanks for any help — I’ll be calling a bloke out after the weekend but I always like to have an idea what is going on with these things 🙂

I would hazard a guess that something in the control board is breaking down as it warms up. Board coupled with drum bearings starting to rumble is going to lead to a hefty bill………

Hi
This is a direct drive washer, which is not the conventional type motor assembly.
If the machine has started to rumble during wash or spin the the highly likely cause is the bearings assembly,The distance between the stator (magnetic disc) and the coils(windings) on this machine is very small thus when bearings fail the stator and coils can touch and once this happens the magnets break and the coils get damaged.
There is also 2 sizes of direct drive dependant if you got the first build or the second build,If you have the larger then the replacement of the bearings will also involve the stator and coil assembly which will make the repair unviable.

Ouch!
Thanks for the replies.
Let’s hope it isn’t as drastic as this — sounds like a very bad design r600a if that turns out to be the case, someone at LG trying to be a little too clever for their own good when calculating tolerances.
Here’s hoping that the sensor was able to flag the problem before the motor assembly ate itself! 😆

Did you get this sorted out as we have exactly the same problem with our LG WM 1480 FHD. I suspected bearings so changed them as a washing machine novice it took me £23 in parts and 3 hours labour.
No bananas though still the LE fault code.
The motor looks good at a quick glance.
Where are you with yours now?
