ParticipantHi Chaps
My lg intellowasher (LG WM14220FD) is failing to drain.
It is 3 years old so out of warranty and does not appear to be a current model according to the lg website.
Occasionally I used to get an OE error which usually meant the drain filter was blocked with a paper tower or tissue, but this time when I had emptied it the filter was clear and there was no obvious blockage further up the line.
More worryingly the drain cycle just seemed to buzz and no pump sound could be heard.
OK so can you tell me if there is any other way to check whether the pump is ok, is it easily accessible from with just the bottom panel removed.
Are there any exploded diagrams to be found on the internet so I can see what has happened. Could it just be a piece of debris blocking the impeller?
Any advice welcomed, and if not a contact for an lg washing machine repair person would be appreciated.

Hi
It could be a object jamming the impellor or else it couple be the pump failed..

yes, I thought that.
I’ve just found the drain to the sink attached to the same waste pipe is blocked, is there a cut out on the lg machine that would cause the pump to cut out until the blockage was clear?
I’ve got some chemical unblocker working on the waste pipe now, so we’ll give it another go when I’ve cleared that.
It still doesn’t get my daughter’s uniform washed for tomorrow’s school though!
Is it relatively easy to get at the pump to check it?

With the filter removed, you can see the pump impellor at the back of the chamber – if there is an obstruction, that’s where you’ll find it.

ok I’ll have a look in the morning.
I suspect the pump has given up the ghost trying to pump through the waste blockage, although last time the waste pipe was blocked the water peed all over the floor from back flow!
thanks for the advice

Should the impeller move freely or is there some resistance due to the pump motor?
I can get the impeller to turn but there’s quite a bit of resistance.
there’s No obvious blockage that I can feel.
How easy is it to change the pump?
Is it just disconnect electricals and hoses and replace the whole unit?
next question where to obtain said pump?

It’s a magnetic motor, so it should resist and the “ping” over each quarter of a revolution. If it feels stiff or gratey, you need to replace it.
THIS is a suitable replacement.

yep already ordered one, thanks
I got the old one out and it did ping every quarter turn, but didn’t feel particularly gritty or stiff.
If it’s not the pump, what else could it be? I set the machine to drain and I hear a humming sound but there is no motion in the pump, and no OE error code shows although I haven’t left it running for very long. It sounds a bit like when the dishwasher flood protection cut-out had tripped.
Do you know if there’s an anti-flood cut out on this machine, and if so how to re-set it? It’s not damp underneath the machine, so unless there’s a blockage on the outlet hose (Which I don’t think there is, but is that relatively easy to check too?)
thanks

Right I’ve changed the pump
but it still doesn’t pump out, no sign of any action there.
🙁
what else could it be? Is there a fuse on the drain pump supply anywhere?
seems to fill and the drum turns round ok (on rinse and spin anyway.
no OE error message this time either when I left it to drain for a while..

Ah well, it helps if you change the right pump!
I was changing the recirculating pump, (which was easy to get to)
I bit the bullet and called a repair chap (recommended by uk whitegoods)
when I realised the drain pump was on the other side of the filter and was virtually impossible to access without stripping the whole machine down.Chap came within about an hour of my original e-mail (I was luckily on the way to his next call) and after doing all the stripping down (Which I would have found very hard to do by myself), the new drain pump was installed and I am now back in the laundry business.
It was some plastic lining from a pantyliner which had got itself seriously wrapped around the impeller of the drain pump which was causing the problem. I’ve removed this and will keep the old pump as an emergency spare.
Why oh why do washing machine designers put the drain pump (Which is a thing that often fails) is such an inaccessible spot. Thanks for your help
