Hi, My washing machine (a direct drive) has started to make an unusual noise.  It is just over 5 years old and have had no problems with it at apart from smelling damp occasionally.  Yesterday noticed that it was making a noise which I can only describe as ‘crackling’.  The noise happens when it is on the wash cycle was stopping when the drum moved – as though it was only making this noise as it moved through its program but it is everytime the drum stops or not filling or spinning.

I decided to do some exclusion tests, it happens on ‘rinse only’ so assume its not the heater, doesn’t happen on drain, but does happen on a ‘cold’ wash.  I have checked the drain/filter and there was nothing in this. Although the noise does seem to be coming from that area.

I have a load in now and noise is still happening but also noticed it is doing it now for part of the drum turning on a wash cycle but  i may have missed that last night.  The noise was happening for part of the rinse cycle until it spin after the first rinse and seems to now have stopped.

The only other thing I have noticed yesterday is that my washing usually comes out slightly warm but last night was cold.  There is no excessive noise when spinning, but did a little walk about 2 weeks ago but not since

The washer does between 7 and 10 loads a week not usually spread out.  I have recently changed from drawer tablets to powder and changed make of conditioner too.

Please can you offer any advice as to what may be the problem?

    That’s a weird problem.

It could very possibly, from what you describe, be some sort of motor or motor related fault including the control for it but without digging about you’re not going to narrow it down much further I wouldn’t think.

The favourite for the Direct Drive LG washing machines is the hall sensor and bearings, the actual motor or stators although they can fail, tend to be pretty reliable.

For what it’s worth from a non-professional who owns an LG DD machine of a slightly different model.

Mine has a circulation pump that sprays the water on top of the load. It only operates at certain points in the programme – it seems to do so when it first fills – presumably to soak everything quickly – then cuts out until (I think) the water hits temperature. It operates all the time during the wash part of a cold wash. Don’t remember whenther it runs during rinses or not.

It makes a bit of a rattling noise sometimes – more noticeable when the drum isn’t moving – and I wonder if that is what you are hearing ?
