I have a stainless steel liebher fridge “Premium Biofresh” – stands 5′ high and next to the matching freezer. Separate units. We’ve had them for about 4 years but we’ve never been happy with the fridge. At Christmas the temp would go up alarmingly to 15C – we quickly got used to opening windows both sides of the fridge and increasing airflow. That usually helped, but we also have the problem of a huge ice buildup behind the back wall of the fridge.

Lately the temp has been reading 4C but the fridge hasn’t felt that cold. I found an old thermometer, popped that in, and it reads 11C. Just to be sure, I bought a fridge/freezer thermometer today and that reads 11C, too. The fridge display says 4C. It’s not unduly hot today and I have opened the window etc but neither the display temp or the actual temp of 11C is changing.

Any thoughts would be welcomed before I ring round the local repair men!

Liebherr tend to have problems with sensors, mostly evap / biofresh sensors

Thank you, that seems reasonable as I’ve never really been happy with the temp control in this fridge. Presumably the cost of replacement is cheaper that a whole new fridge!

Have you tried defrosting it completely? Even if its an auto defrost type it might have got out of sync in regard to the defrost cycling, this could have happened by the door been left slightly open for a long period fr instance & just has a build up of ice.

Spot on! The ice build up is tremendous, it’s been a problem for a couple of years. We defrost it and it seems to be OK afterwards, but not lately. Hubby was wondering if the sensor is affected by any residual ice rather than by the circulating air temperature? I now have two independent thermometers in there telling me that the fridge temperature (by the back wall) is +11 whilst the display insists that it is +5.

To be honest, I regret ever having bought it because maintaining temperature has always been difficult. Our kitchen is always within the +10 – +30 range specified, and is quite large and open plan so there’s always a good draught and ventilation, so I am a little mystified. My elderly mother has a habit of leaving the door open whilst she peers inside – but that’s only2 minutes at the most and the seal on the door sounds effective with a good “vacuum” effect when you open the door.

My plan is to start defrosting tomorrow night and really leave it all weekend if necessary until there is absolutely no ice left. Start it up again. If the problem continues, ring an engineer?? 😀

    Thankyou!

UPDATE We spent the weekend completely defrosting the fridge until there was not a drop of melted water anywhere, really gave it a lot of time, well over 24 hours. It is working properly at the moment but I have to be obsessive about not letting elderly mother stand in front of the open fridge deciding what to eat…..the key seems to be to concentrate on the temperature around the fridge and to be paranoid about keeping the door closed! Good result though. That was a few weeks ago, the next weekend the boiler broke! (Soon fixed, under contract!).
