Old retired service engineer here; you know the sort, the type of customer you don’t want to visit and do a repair as will tell you what to do after pulling up a chair, sits down and watches every move. Tell you all his past history, then express surprise that R12 has been outlawed!
Back on topic. Daughter has a Liebherr 4713 Index 22A/001, about 4 years old. I can only go by what I’ve been told on the phone as she’s over 200 miles away. Fridge not working at all, freezer fine.
I have a suspicion this one may have a diverter valve, and the symptoms fit if that’s the case. Nothing going to fridge section, freezer nicely efficient. Fridge remains at ambient temp with the door shut.
Any Ideas? If valve, is it sealed in the system and if so if worth the bother.

as for the valves I would expect them to have an extenal solenoid which can fail

Dave, thanks for getting back to me. Nice to re-visit this dear old site and catch up on some gossip.
Just spoken to someone from the good old Liebherr days, no solenoid coil on that model, probably ice inside the freezer back wall restricting air flow to the top cabinet. So son-in-law is now embarking an a full defrost, and have a feeling will solve it.
He decided to join Brit Gas (excuse me whilst I spit on the floor) with their repair/protect policy and if no fix, no charge. Guy rocked up, sucked between his teeth, said will be the diverter valve and he’s not a systems engineer. Fortunately BG haven’t taken the money and assured there will be no charge.
Son-in-law tried D&G, they didn’t want to know! Phoned Liebherr gave him the name of a company in Burnley, he phoned them, they quoted an inspection fee but advised if means breaking into the system, they won’t be able to help. They’re supposed to be the appointed agent!! Up until that point son-in-law was convinced (thanks to BG engineer) there was an in-built solenoid. So, one engineer and the appointed Liebherr agent failed to consider might be an easy fix. Seems like people cannot be arsed.
am afraid the quality of enginners is falling as we retire
am well past retiring age but just enjoy the job (and the income)

Good to hear from you Alex, do you still have relations in the Mossley area? The Burnley firm was possibly ELDAR, Eddie Laycocks company. He has very recently retired and sold the business to Steve Burns, a former WTA member and former DASA chairman.

Hi Jim. The Mossley one moved down south to escape abuse, less said the better. Still have one in Hyde and that was the one with the F/F. Regards Eldar, son-in-law phoned Liebherr, they sent him to Eldar, he phoned Eldar who suggested will be a system fault and they no longer carry out system work?! All that was wrong was a frozen up freezer evaporator, basic fundamental stuff. Sorted with a hand-held steamer. Have a feeling Eldar under new management yet again, or poorly trained receptionist. Steve Burns no longer DASA? He was one of the few who were passionate about the old organisation.
Anyway, move on, retired and as always lots to do. Stay well & nice to hear from you.
